Three More Disney World Attractions Set to Close for Refurbishment

Weirdly timed renovations continue to define this summer at Disney World. (Well, those and rides breaking down.) WDW News Today reports that three more “refurbishments” are happening now or are scheduled to happen soon: the Cinderella’s Castle stage, which has boards surrounding it as it undergoes three weeks of construction; Jungle Cruise, which will begin a refurbishment on August 26 that will last at least through September 7; and Sport Goofy Gifts and Sundries, a gift shop that will be refurbished from July through September. These join a series of other attractions that are being refurbished: The Gran Floridian Resort and Spa, Peter Pan’s Flight, Test Track, and Big Thunder Mountain.

The only one of those that makes sense to me is Jungle Cruise, which is at least closing at the end of the summer. But it seems crazy that Disney would shut down the stage at Cinderella’s Castle, which is the centerpiece of The Magic Kingdom, where the big shows are performed. WDW News Today surmises that this is to get it ready for shows coming in the fall, like the Halloween and Christmas parties. But this makes it even more nonsensical; if the refurbishment will only take three weeks, wouldn’t it be more prudent to do it in September, or at least late August, like Jungle Cruise? You don’t have to sacrifice summer for autumn. And if the construction on Sport Goofy Gifts and Sundries won’t necessitate closing the store, why do it now? If it’s in disrepair, I get it, but if it’s just to fix it up or remodel, again, wouldn’t it be better to wait? This, combined with some of the other odd things happening at Disney World – like the new “Good to Go Days” during July – make it seem like Disney is writing off this summer for its theme parks. I know Disney’s in a bad way right now, but it’s still rather astonishing to see Disney World like this.
