The final trailer for The Clone Wars’ highly-anticipated season seven has been released a month ahead of its debut on Disney+. The 2-minute clip has spurred lots of theories and excitement, uniting Star Wars fans, if only for a moment. You can see the clip here:
Anchored by Darth Maul’s voiceover saying the Jedi and the Republic will die, the camera pans over several battles among clone troopers and Jedi as iconic lines from the prequels are dropped. For example, Mace Windu reveals that he senses a plot to destroy the Jedi. We get several glimpses of Ahsoka, who at one point is asked how she can stop being a Jedi. In response, the former padawan learner offers a different take on Windu’s line from Attack of the Clones that has even more resonance here: “We were trained to be keepers of the peace, not soldiers.” The Clone Wars trailer climaxes on an evocative image of Anakin reaching out for a hologram of Padmé as Ashoka and Maul prepare to do battle.
As I was watching the Clone Wars trailer, George Lucas’s famous words, “It’s like poetry; it rhymes,” echoed in my head. For many fans who weren’t keen on the prequels, The Clone Wars served as something of a course correction for this era of the franchise. Having grown up with the prequels, I tend to disagree, so it was wonderful to see all the little nods to the prequels in this trailer. I’m sure once Mr. Lucas sees this, he’ll be pleased as well. I’m so glad his “padawan,” Dave Filoni, returned to finish this series. While his Mandalorian episodes weren’t as strong as others, it’s a very good thing he’s still involved with the franchise, and this trailer is proof. You feel the passion in every frame on screen, and this reminds us all of why we love Star Wars. Here’s hoping the series finishes strong in a few weeks!
