Baby Yoda is on his way back to Disney+, and he’s bringing along a few new friends. Entertainment Weekly reports that season 2 of The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV series, will premiere on Disney+ in October of 2020, and will include new characters that may receive their own spinoffs in the near future. This news once again highlights Disney and Lucasfilm’s continued shift in strategy where the George Lucas-created franchise is concerned.
I had been looking forward to The Mandalorian for a long time, and it didn’t disappoint, so to not only have news on a release date for season 2 but also potential spinoffs is exciting, especially in the wake of the fantastic Star Wars Underworld footage. Given Lucasfilm’s commitments to Obi-Wan and the Rogue One prequel Cassian Andor – both of which, the article notes, are still in development – I didn’t think we’d get any direct spinoffs of The Mandalorian. The Star Wars universe is expansive enough that Lucasfilm can virtually go anywhere they want, perhaps even using that Underworld footage as a springboard. Although some fans might feel a spinoff would make the universe smaller, I like the fact that Lucasfilm is at least considering taking a page from the likes of Star Trek and the Arrowverse. That being said, I hope that, whoever these characters turn out to be, the focus of The Mandalorian remains on the titular character and the Child. The last thing Star Wars needs is to introduce a spinoff to the detriment of the lead, much like Arrow did a couple of weeks ago. No matter what, I’ll be watching with great interest as we get more information on the televised future of the Star Wars saga.
