Bill & Ted are Back!

Whoa! Get set for another excellent adventure, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a third Bill & Ted movie, titled Bill & Ted  Face the Music, is in the works, with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprising their roles as Ted Theodore Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq., respectively. Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the writers of the first two films, have completed the script, and Dean Parisot (of Galaxy Quest fame) is directing.  The synopsis, as per THR, is…

Currently in preproduction, Bill & Ted Face the Music will see the duo long past their days as time-traveling teenagers and now weighed down by middle age and the responsibilities of family. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it. Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on a time travel adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends, they find much, much more than just a song.

Bill & Ted

While sequels to long-dormant franchises have a rather lackluster track record, this one certainly has potential. The Bill & Ted movies are tons of fun (some would say Ted is the role Reeves was born to play), and the return of the original writers signals at least an honest attempt to recapture the magic. Putting Parisot behind the camera is a boon as well; Galaxy Quest has become a cult classic for good reason. Comedy legend George Carlin will be missed as time-travel guide Rufus, and the addition of a bunch of young sidekicks could be excruciating if mishandled, but the promise of another great sci-fi comedy from this creative team is too enticing to get bogged down in trepidation.

Are you looking forward to a third ride with the Wyld Stallyns? Is the old phone booth out of juice? Does the idea of seeing Bill and Ted as middle-aged dads make you feel as old as it does me? Let us know in the comments!
