There may be some new “treasure protectors” on the scene. In a recent interview with Collider for his new Starz show Hightown, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Disney+ will produce a TV series based on the National Treasure movies; this would be in addition to the Chris Bremner-scripted National Treasure 3. The series is said to focus on a younger cast, and Bruckheimer claims that the pilot script has already been written, as has an outline for future episodes. There has been no word on who is writing the show.
This news is almost too good to be true. After years of wondering whether we would get a third movie, it seems that the National Treasure franchise is finally back on track. This idea is perfect for Disney+, and almost sounds akin to TNT’s Librarians, so I’m excited to see what the creatives involved have done with National Treasure here, hopefully bringing this underrated property to its full potential. There are several places it can go, so it’s good the House of Mouse is finally capitalizing on one of their home-grown properties rather than continuously relying on their acquired IPs like Marvel or Star Wars. While Bruckheimer‘s recent track record with features has been a far cry from his heyday, the prolific producer has continued to have great success in television, particularly with Lucifer and Hightown. Here’s hoping they’ll have Nicholas Cage and Jon Turteltaub involved in the pilot, particularly the former since he seems more willing to do TV these days.
