With Father’s day this weekend, I was wondering what my fellow movie buffs watch for their father-related cinema. It’s a common theme, so there’s a great variety to choose from.
I lost my dad 12 years ago, and I still miss him, this time of year especially. Every Father’s day, I watch Frequency. It’s not a really well-known movie, but I’m a big fan. It was a very cathartic movie for me since I watched it the first time only a few months after my dad passed away. Its focus is almost entirely on a father-son relationship, with the backdrop being mysterious connection between a HAM radio owned by the father in the 1960s and the son in the present(2000). They communicate with eachother, even though the father has been dead for decades. Their conversation changes things for more than just themselves, and soon they’re wrapped up in the case of a serial killer.
Sure, the plot sounds kind of Hallmarky, but the movie is fantastic and has great performances by the two leads(Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel).
Other standard father-son fare for me includes the Star Wars OT(Especially Episode VI, my favorite), and the Godfather.
Tell me what father-son movies you all enjoy, even if they don’t involve fathers directly, but have a special connection to you and yours. I’d love to hear them.
