Website request: Movie database

This was discussed months ago. I concur.

It would require a huge amount of data entry. Imagine the thousands of entries that would require. It is entirely possible that they

are planning to do this one day at a certain point, but they’d have to hire someone like me to sit there and enter movie after movie

including photos, etc. It would be a huge project. When they do decide to do this, I’d be happy to get paid to work on it. I sent them an email

months ago, but this would take a long time to complete.

I use blu-ray.com, because typically by the time I watch a movie, it’s been released to disc.

In spite of the domain, it covers DVDs, Digital, and games too. Users can maintain their own personal collections by simply clicking “add to collection” on movies already in the database, or they can add their own if they happen to have a movie not yet in the database.  Users can also add comments to items in their collection, write reviews, contribute to ratings, create personal lists, generate graphs about their collection (like genre, release year, etc,) and mark items in their collection as “watched” or not. The site also has their own forum, posts news about upcoming releases, and you can sign up to be notified when new releases become available to buy on websites such as Amazon.

There is even a “collection matcher” which compares your collection to other users and lists the matches in descending order by closest match percentage. It can be interesting to see what others with similar interests have in their collection that you haven’t discovered yet.

Of course this website is going to appeal mostly to people who prefer physical media over externally-streamed digital (I make the distinction “externally-streamed digital” because actually a lot of us physical-copy proponents make and use our own digital copies streamed from our home-based media servers. I rarely use my BDs after ripping them to digital; they serve only as backup).

Bottom line, whenever I want to see how others have rated a movie, I use blu-ray.com, because I’ve found their users a bit more mature and ratings more dependable than other more popular sites.  The downside of course is that some of you would like this info while movies are still in theaters, in which case this site probably won’t work for you at all.

With that said,  creating the database, user interface and user functions at blu-ray.com took an enormous effort.  Many, if not most, of the movie records were added, corrected, and updated by the members themselves. In spite of this, the data is remarkably accurate and detailed. The members are dedicated, educated fans who care about specs like aspect ratio and hi-fi audio.

I cannot imagine only one person accomplishing something like this in any reasonable amount of time.  Maybe there is another website that specializes in new-releases which G+G can partner with?
