Avatar The Last Airbender is an Anime, Change My Mind
Definition of anime
: a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes
As great as Avatar is, and I did a full rewatch earlier this year, so it still holds up, it is American animation in style, format, and story telling. It’s not anime. It’s an example of how good Western cartoons can still be if done with care, love, and passion.
It uses a westernized anime style, but that’s pretty much it, neither is it produced in japan nor does it feel japanese (japanese writing differs a lot from western writing), it’s pretty much an anime style western cartoon, which I personally don’t like very much.
I agree with MusouTensei and Roas on this one. Let’s not forget about the movements within the animation.
Its not, for the same reasons listed above.
Buuuut, it is a good stepping off point to try to get people into anime. They are very similar in very noticeable ways, so stepping off into something like Death Note or FMA/FMA: Brotherhood from Avatar is a good next step.
