We’re about to find out whether one man can make a difference. According to a recent report from Deadline, SpyGlass Media Group is looking to resurrect the iconic Knight Rider TV series as a movie. This time, the plan is to set the film in the modern day but maintain the anti-establishment tone of the original series, which starred the legendary David Hasselhoff. Video game writer TJ Fixman is writing the script, and James Wan is set to produce; there’s no word on whether the Aquaman director will take the helm.
I want to be excited about this news, but it’s hard not to be skeptical given the long twisty road Knight Industries has taken to get to the big screen. Initially, there were attempts to maintain fidelity to the original series, with Michael Knight returning in a mentor role and his son taking over the lead – something that somewhat came to fruition in the highly underrated 2008 continuation series. There seemed to be new life in the franchise back in 2015, with Chris Pratt and Danny McBride possibly taking over the lead roles and turning the film into a comedy. I wasn’t thrilled with that idea, if only because I felt like I knew exactly how this was going to play out, and it would detract from what the franchise is all about. With the advent of AI technology and Google cars, there may be a chance for some fascinating commentary on the state of automobiles right now, without making Knight Rider a paint-by-numbers star vehicle. Yes, this has every chance of feeling dated, but with the likes of Wan involved as a producer, it feels like KITT’s time on the big screen has come. Let’s just hope no one tells KARR.

I really liked the “new” continuation series, can’t believe that was in 2008, time sure flies.
I hope David Hasselhoff stars in it even though he’s older.
