Last Exile–quick review

This review is for the old original series. I think there’s a much more recent sequel, too, but I’ve not yet seen it.

Good:

I mostly liked the overall look and feel of the anime. I like the it had few really bright colors, as it was a mostly serious story.

The main characters were mostly likeable, though the main villain was pretty grating and obnoxious. That’s not really a negative, the main villain was meant to be that way.

The story world was fascinating.

Bad:

Confusing. I don’t think the story world was well explained. Why did the air ships need men with rifles to shoot at each other? How was there some kind of water shortage when the land looked so green? Why was the Guild causing and instigating so much conflict and trouble? And the ending was very confusing, too.

What was going on with the character Mullin Shetland? He changed his mind so much, it was like he was far too realistic. And what happened to him after he was shot during the boarding action in the build-up to the last fight?

A little too much relationship angst in the middle. They really didn’t need to give Claus a sort of harem.

Conclusion:

Not bad, but could have been a lot better. Really wanted to like it, but mostly felt kinda “Meh” at the end.
