The topic title is in reference to a British Sonic convention that used to be held in London every year, but the last one was sadly back in 2016 and hasn’t been reconvened since. With Summer basically here, I figured why not celebrate Sonic’s upcoming 30th anniversary (June 21st) with fellow fans here on this forum to discuss and share anything and everything related to the Blue Blur and how they might spend the next few months.
To start off, I think the most ample thing to talk about at the moment is Sega’s announcement for their plans for Sonic for the rest of the year:
Personally? Ngl, it’s not very good. Cameos in other games and bonuses in mobile games are nothing to get excited about and would’ve hardly drawn attention back in the day. It really speaks to the state of franchise if the first thing they announce are Easter Eggs (Lost Judgement looks kinda cool, though, may look out for that). But at least they made up for it with what followed.
Sonic Colours Remastered? Yes please. I’m aware of the ire it draws these days (especially among some Gen Z fans), but at the time it was what the franchise needed and breathed fresh life into it. The game’s graphics are beautiful, but sadly limited by the Wii’s hardware specifications. Upgrading to an HD port is badly needed. The proper 30th anniversary game teased at the very end is sadly far away from completion, and Sonic Team, I assume, know better not to release it half-baked. I’m glad they’re at least trying and making up for it with an update to a modern classic.
I’ve brought a number of compilation games in the past, and still own and prefer the MegaDrive originals, but I don’t mind buying the classics again. So glad they’re including Sonic CD with the other core games this time. It’s part of the Golden Age of Sonic, and deserves to be recognized as such.
For the record, I’m more than aware of the Sonic Netflix series being discussed on these very forums. I just haven’t commented on it because I have no opinion on it (and I’m not terribly fond of Netflix as a company, but that’s another discussion). I’m typically a “wait-and-see” sort of person, so I’m going to reserve judgement until I see results.
Other info going around the rumor mill:
> Sonic 2 movie has basically been confirmed to be in production, and will feature Tails and Knuckles.
> Roger Craig Smith and other actors at Studiopolis who have voiced the cast since 2010, are apparently stepping down. It’s unclear who will succeed them going forward (Mike Pollock, however, might still be voicing Eggman as he’s always done since the 4Kids days. I remember not thinking too highly of his performance back then, but he’s grown into the role splendidly).
> Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, who have been writing the games since Sonic Colours, might be retiring from the series.
This might mark the end of what has been dubbed the “Meta Era” by fans, where the series became more light-hearted and self-aware. I stand by that Colours was what the franchise needed at the time, but I do agree that it ended up setting a bad precedent. The majority of the cast ended up being shafted and didn’t see any proper screen time, most of them being caricatures of what they once were whenever they did show up.
And the storylines got progressively worse. Colours? A fun adventure game focusing on just Sonic and Tails, rather reminiscent of the old cartoon. Generations? An anniversary game to celebrate the games up until that point, so you can let things slide. But Lost World and Forces? They squandered on their own potential and fell flat on their face with poor characterization and weak plot points, with 30-second cutscenes that barely justified anything that was going on. Pontac and Graff are not necessarily bad writers, but they were not suited for staying on for this series long-term. Hopefully, we’ll get new writers who’ll take a look at the Adventure duology and keep in mind what it was about the series that the core fanbase loves.
> Supposedly, chief development of the Sonic franchise going forward has moved from Japan to California, USA. Can’t say I’m entirely thrilled about that but “Japanese Sonic” has effectively been dead since Sonic & the Black Knight. Sonic’s popularity in Japan has likely dwindled a lot compared to how it was in the 90’s and 2000’s and the franchise has been sustained by the Western fandom in the 2010’s, so this decision only makes sense and is basically making it official. I guess we can only see where this will go.
All in all, it definitely seems Sonic Team want to effectively start a new era for Sonic, realizing that the last ten years haven’t actually been all that great. In the 2000s, Sonic may not have been the rock star that he once was, but at least he still had a substantial and loyal following. There was no need for him to fall this hard, and I hope Sonic Team can restore confidence in this franchise with the ambition we used to see.
30 years??? Dang and it felt like just yesterday that I was getting ‘Sonic Generations’ on the 3DS for Sonic’s 20th anniversary. I’ve also still got that game mag full of stuff from the 20th anniversary too😂
@DragonLady Doesn’t really feel all that long ago, does it? Early 2010’s seemed like a Sonic Renaissance. I loved home console version of Generations and got the 3DS just for more content. Wasn’t disappointed in that regard.
Going on to share one of my favorite games, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. To date, it is still an unforgettable experience, it’s story akin to that of a shounen anime. I remember getting hyped as hell for this game, and seeing the intro for the first time at only ten years old was enough to make me think this game was going to be incredible.
This game’s story broke the conventional mold of Sonic games up until that point: While Eggman was back and up to his old tricks again, there was something far more ominous: At his side was a mysterious water creature with a connection to the Chaos Emeralds, and if allowed to achieve its “perfect form,” would destroy the world.
Sonic’s Story Longplay (for those who want to watch gameplay segments).
It Doesn’t Matter (Sonic’s theme)
While Sonic’s arc is a classic tale of Sonic going up against his arch-enemy and putting a stop to his latest schemes, it might feel like you’re getting an incomplete story. That’s intentional: The overall saga is actually broken up into seven parts, each from the perspective of different characters. As you play as the other characters, the other pieces will fall into place of what was going without Sonic’s knowledge and questions surrounding the nature of Chaos are answered, all for building towards a grand finale.
Couple of notes on Sonic’s characterization:
> Sonic is impatient and a bit of jerk, but has a steadfast heart of gold. It’s important he shouldn’t come off as being a dick, but he’s a bit too nice in modern games, imo. This is how you give him an attitude that he should have but without overdoing it (there are a fair few funny moments here where he shows exasperation at his friends. You can’t help but actually take his side whenever they say or do something a bit stupid).
> The final confrontation between him and Eggman. Chaos was defeated, and so the threat is neutralized. But that isn’t enough for Sonic. Even though he doesn’t have to, he gives chase. Eggman just doesn’t need simply need to be defeated, he needs his resolve crushed, leaving him demoralized and humiliated. Confronting the Egg Viper for the first time made my hairs stand on end, as there was this personal weight to it. It shows just how, despite his otherwise blase and carefree attitude, Sonic actually takes his enemies pretty seriously and is dedicated to protecting what he cherishes (the freedom of himself and others).
Will post more on the other characters stories later.
Believe in Myself (Tails’ theme)
Tails defeating Eggman all by himself and becoming a hero in his own right is something we haven’t seen for his character since the Dreamcast era. A shame Sonic Team seem to have forgotten that he’s supposed to be far more than just a sidekick.
1999: Tails bravely faces off against Chaos and Dr. Eggman as Sonic and Knuckles’ equal.
2017: “Tails has just lost it.”
Friendly reminder that this is what we could’ve gotten. A Chaos 0 boss fight wasn’t even in Forces: He gets punked in a single cutscene.
It’s like Sonic Team are on there way to becoming Bethesda: “Mods will fix it.” Hope they prove me wrong.
Just learned Roger Craig Smith has confirmed that he’s going to continue voicing Sonic for now, so scratch the rumor that he wasn’t. Personally, I’m good with this. He’s the best English Sonic so far, bringing a certain cockiness that was lacking with Drummond and Griffith. Can’t really think of anyone better suited to play the character (except Jun’ichi Kanemaru, of course).
The bulk of Sonic Adventure’s main story is actually told from Knuckles POV:
Unknown from M.E. (Knuckles’ theme)
It’s a shame Sonic Team never really touched more Knuckles past, but I guess they wanted to take the “less is more” approach at that time and have never found a good reason to return to this particular backstory since (aware that the Sonic RPG on the DS by BioWare does touch more on the Echidna’s, but I’ve not played it).
A national treasure:
Western media: “We need to make female characters more like men in order to make them heroic.”
Sonic Team in 1999:
My Sweet Passion (Amy’s theme)
Amy’s story is one of gaining assertiveness and self-sufficiency, while will retaining her feminine charm. I loved the ending here: After being relentlessly chased by ZERO the Garbage Bot, she completely snaps and hammers him into oblivion, defeating one of Eggman’s more advanced mechs all by herself. Her little speech also indicates that while she still yearns for Sonic’s affection, she also recognizes that he’s never going to turn his eyes on her until she becomes a bit more of her own person and works hard to earn it. Shame this character development went completely forgotten.
HECK YEAH BIG THE CAT
Lazy Days (Livin’ in Paradise) (Big’s theme)
A much maligned character because most Sonic fans didn’t exactly appreciate being forced to go fishing in a Sonic game. This story is the least developed of them all, and yet, I rather appreciate this uncomplicated perspective: Big isn’t a part of Sonic’s core cast of friends, he is simply a nobody living in the larger world. It’s part of what makes Sonic Adventure one of my favorite games, because it doesn’t revolve around Sonic himself but makes him just one inhabitant of it. Big gets dragged into events and doesn’t understand exactly what’s going on, but the Japanese version in particular makes him endearing and likable because he’s a simple man who just wants his friend back.
Mind you, this kind of approach in storytelling only really works once, so I understand why Sonic Team haven’t returned to it.
OPEN YOUR HEART IT’S GONNA BE ALL RIIIIGHHHHT
One of the best Sonic stories, and one of the best showdowns in the whole saga. This game was absolutely amazing to me as a kid, and I still think it holds up relatively well. Kinda wish Sonic Team would return to this sort of angle, only on a much larger scale.
