Everytime I watch a Youtube video like Tim Pool, Theqaurtering and other Youtubers like that who keep telling me and others get a VPN. In this age of censorship and Big Tech having all the power do we really need a VPN even though these companies and other groups could have very smart people on their staff who could easily takedown a VPN of any kind with no trouble?

I watched a bunch of different Youtubers who talk about why you should get a VPN and why you shouldn’t. You have Tim Pool or The Qaurtering who both constantly say getting a VPN for safety is a great idea then you have other Youtubers who say if you get a VPN you look like you are up to something illegal even when alot of people these days just want privacy and nothing more.

It seems to be no clear answer on the argument of using or not using a VPN. I hear that there is no point to having VPNs because most governments and corporations around the world can hack into most VPNs.

Also what is to say that most if not all VPN companies aren’t secretly in bed with these big tech corporations or even governments around the world that want to mine people’s data along with location and are secretly working with them selling people fake hope that their online identity could be safe with a VPN and all the VPN really does is just give the illusion of online protection and secretly gives big corporations and governments more an even detailed information of who their users are in a more narrow magnify glass to see them through that a VPN could be?

VPNs suddenly becoming big in this day and age when Big Tech Censorship is on the rise, and these VPN companies are big computer firms too that love making money, so I wonder can people who really want privacy or anything like that trust a VPN company to keep their identities safe from Big Tech or the world Governments? Cause bribery from Big Tech or Governments or even legal action from governments can easily force any VPN company to give up their users’ data.

Can people truly trust another tech company to protect their privacy from Big Tech or the Government? I just keep thinking VPN companies could be secretly in league with Big Tech. Mark Zuckerberg is very wealthy, and cunning along with intelligent what is to stop him from secretly buying a VPN company or several VPN companies and using an alias as the owner of that VPN company to collect user information in the guise of protecting random users’ data?

People don’t think billionaire tech people wouldn’t have thought up all the angles and inevitabilities when running businesses that collect user information like VPNs? How do we know that VPN services aren’t secretly owned or has stock shares from Mark Zuckerberg or Google and they manipulate people like Tim Pool and Theqaurtering secretly without their knowledge to get their viewers who hate big tech to get it so the VPNs with their more narrow direct user data collecting in the guise of privacy could gather even more data from people than ever?

Cause VPNs seem to get promoted alot in many many Youtube videos as sponsors…what is the say the sponsors aren’t getting a huge bit of their money from people like Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook playing an Emperor Palpatine being both the monsters and heroes? I am just wondering, VPNs could be too good to be true, and in this world what is to say there isn’t another motive of selling false hope to scared people who want true internet privacy?

In most cases no. 99% of what you see is marketing and that is because it’s a very high profit margin business.

The only reason to use one is to obfuscate where you are coming from or if you need to encrypt your traffic from point A to B for some reason. There are legit reasons to do both but for normal guy on the internets it does not provide a lot of value.

I don’really know how VPNs work, all i do know is they let you access country restrictions, example: you’re in canada, right? So if you have netflix canada, but you want to watch something that’s only available in netflix UK, you can use a VPN to access netflix UK, and any other country’s, library, same goes for youtube videos that are restricted in certain countries

        @Digicat

Well up North there are two Bills that are being pushed through right now by the current government called Bill C-10 and Bill C-36 which will create a firewall to block out all non Canadian content and even give legal right for the government to arrest people for thought crime like having an opinion not like the woke mob. So a VPN might be the only way for people up North to thrive and see Jeremy talk about Star Wars.

A VPN helps the people living in the country that makes cheap stuff for Walmart access the outside world….and with things are going up North, people in Canada might not have a choice soon as a VPN might be the only way to see Geeks and Gamers or any non Canadian content.

@DigiCat  That is one of the main reasons those ads for VPNs have as a selling point, being able to change your server of origin so you can access sites/vids that are only accessible in that region.

For example, the Battlestar Galactica (2004) had those webisodes, they were only available to IPs within the USA.

So the international fans of the show could not get access to watch them with their regular internet providers.

Bypassing geo restrictions is really the most common reason to use a VPN at this point (for a home user that is). However, you must understand that often times that does not work because the company that is geo-restricting knows the IPs for most major VPNs. I am not saying it never works, just that in many cases it won’t so it’s not fool proof.

The thing they tell you about VPN’s in marketing that is somewhat incorrect is that it’s a privacy thing. Sure, you encrypt your traffic so your ISP cannot see you but your traffic is only encrypted until it hits your VPN provider. After that it hits the internet at the ISP of the VPN provider. So that ISP can see what you are doing. And then most VPN providers keep logs so bottom line is someone still knows what you are doing on the internet.

I use VPN on my work computer so I can work remotely from home. On my private computer no need

That is a totally different use case of course. In that situation you are using VPN to securely access your work network. Or to look at it another way you are using VPN to securely extend your work network to your home. And that is indeed probably the most common use of a VPN all told.

If that’s the case you might want to save up for a VPN, youtube channels Sydney Watson, Billiam, and Jolly are all sponsored by VPNs, so they give out discount codes for monthly, even yearly, subscriptions, also subscriptions come with about a month free, so if you don’t like one or it’s not working properly you can always switch to another

I am quite sure if they are going to the trouble to setup a mechanism to block traffic they will probably also block certain well known VPN traffic as well.

@Digicat Speaking of Canada…we up north might be experiencing a Canadian firewall soon that will block out all outside content

I suppose it depends on whether you think you need one or not. I don’t have the “if you’re not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to hide” mentality cause my privacy is my privacy, even if all I’m doing is watching videos of Otters being goofy lol.

Essentially if you don’t want your ISP snooping on what you’re doing, regardless of what sort of activities you perform online, then a VPN would be a good idea. If it’s something you’re interested in I personally suggest ProtonVPN, but I’d also encourage you to do research of your own as well. Most of the VPN’s YouTubers are sponsored by aren’t all that great. Kinda like how everyone and their mama is sponsored by Raid: Shadow Legends haha.

ProtonVPN is a good one. But understand that yes, while using a VPN your ISP cannot snoop on you as easily but the VPN’s ISP can. And the VPN ISP is essentially a honeypot at that point. I am not saying don’t use one I am saying understand what it does and does not do. If you are shooting for max privacy then you want a mix of VPN and TOR. Some VPN’s offer this and I think Proton is one of them.
