Legally Blonde writer Karen McCullah has been active on Twitter slapping down rumors and the “insinuation” of an alternate LGBTQ storyline in the movie.
On the 20th anniversary of the movie, an oral history was published in the New York Times. McCullah tweeted the original article before any other outlets latched onto the false claims made by one of the actors, Jessica Cauffiel.
Cauffiel is quoted saying, “The first ending was Elle and Vivian in Hawaii in beach chairs, drinking margaritas and holding hands. The insinuation was either they were best friends or they had gotten together romantically.”
This retroactive “insinuation” by Cauffiel led many articles and “fans” of the movie to claim they had “missed out on the gay Legally Blonde ending.”
McCullah has since been tweeting at the various outlets and people posting the false claims, saying they are “untrue.”

One Twitter user who tried to upstage McCullah by asking for her source got the response, “I wrote the movie. I’m in the picture you just posted. The actress quoted was incorrect.”

Legally Blonde 3 is set to release in 2022. Karen McCullah is writing the screenplay for the third installment. Jessica Cauffiel, the actress who made the false “insinuation,” will also appear in the film. That should make for some interesting creative discussions about the direction of the film and its’ storylines.
I saw that online! It was funny, reminded me of a similar story with I think the writer of Men in Black correcting some people at a restaurant talking about his movie.
