Growing up close to Cincinnati, I often listened not only to Marty and Joe announcing Reds games on the radio, but also to the sports talk shows that were on the radio stations. Yeah, I was really big into sports at that time.
It seems like one of the big discussion topics during these shows was “Who should the team trade away, and who should they trade for”. I don’t know if I would have used such a word at that time, but I can see now that by and large players were treated like commodities, even by the fans. If Joe Shortstop could be sent to Timbuktu so the team could get Ace Pitcher and a couple of draft picks, then the team would be stupid to not send Joe away.
It seems one-sided, then, that fans and teams will demand loyalty from the players while not really returning that loyalty except in some very exceptional cases.
It seems like players are a commodity because they are. Well to be more specific their talents are. Pro sports like Baseball and Football etc are businesses. There can be loyalty there but economics will always take precedent. Especially in sports where their is a salary cap. It’s just how the world works.
True, but that’s also why I don’t blame players for treating teams like commodities, too, if and when they are able. If a player leaves one team because he can make more money with another, or has a better chance of winning a desired championship with another, then I’m fine with that.
Absolutely, that goes both ways. And in the case of football they have a very limited amount of time to make money so they really have to be aggressive with contracts and such.
But there is a right way and a wrong way of doing it.
When a team/player mutually decide it is in everyone’s best interest, I am fine with.
Ray Bourque being moved by Boston Bruins to Colorado Avalanche was done very respectfully.
Then we have Eric Lindros and his rejection being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques.
Then we have the court jester’s clown show signing with the Miami Heat.
To this taking contract negotiations public, doing it via social media/public opinion, sit-outs/no-shows, etc.
While I understand they want to use everything at their disposal to get as much exposure/money as possible, the negativity/bad press/pissing on your fans, is NOT the best for image making.
To me, most of that just tells me their egos and spoiled brat mentality has gotten out of control.
Do I blame players for leaving teams? Most times – NO.
But there is a right way and a wrong way to do it.
Sadly, most players now IMO does it in the wrong way.
