Barcelona announces Lionel Messi will leave club due to financial obstacles

Lionel Messi’s time with FC Barcelona has come to an end. The team tweeted Thursday that Messi will not continue with the club after it was thought he had a new deal to remain with the team.

Oh, and what was the issue?

Under La Liga rules, Barcelona would have had to cut roughly $200 million in salary to retain Messi, according to the New York Times. That was an unrealistic figure, and the only way Barcelona was going to keep Messi was if La Liga granted the team an exception. La Liga’s chief executive Javier Tebas said in July that wasn’t going to happen.

And what was the deal La Liga would not accept?

It was reported Messi agreed to a new five-year deal to remain with Barcelona in July, but financial issues with the club prevented that deal from getting done. In its statement, the team said the deal could not be completed due to “financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).”

So why was the contract negotiated in such a way that it would NOT be approved?

Or is this just the way they can say they tried?

the truth is, he’s old and they want to spend the salary on someone else, they want to move on and focus on the future now.

But Messi is still great and he can even get a bigger salary somewhere else, he’s probably going to Paris or Inter (if they sell Lukaku)… or even Man United.

He’s like a bee or a hummingbird. I watch him play and he does the impossible over and over again. He’s also the size of a very average man. Like seeing a miracle, watching him play.

Did Messi at one point wanted OUT after the Catalan side’s humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals last year?

So this makes him leaving because of league rules instead.

    How convenient.

Messi even took a 50% pay cut for the new contract but even with that, Barcelona had to sell 3-4 players because they’re knees deep in shit (=debt). This isn’t possible since the players Barcelona wanted to sell are old and average players with big salary so no team wants to have them and the players don’t wanna leave, so there was no way out for Barcelona. Messi just moments ago had a press conference where he cried, he represented the club since 2004.

Everything is because of  Josep Bartomeu, the former club president who took quick loans and spent reckless amounts on average players who flopped during his run in 2014-2021 before resigning. He lied to players and managers and hired social media agencies to spread fake rumours about people he didn’t like.

So why was the contract negotiated in such a way that it would NOT be approved?

Or is this just the way they can say they tried?

good question. No one knows how it’s possible since everybody knew the situation. My guess is that Barcelona hoped La Liga would bend the rules to accept Barcelona keeping Messi because Messi brought about 30% of the revenues to La Liga. So not having Messi there is a huge blow for the league so I guess Barclona tried to use that to get a free pass.

the truth is, he’s old and they want to spend the salary on someone else, they want to move on and focus on the future now.

Since 2017, Messi’s salary cost Barcelona 383 000 000€ but generated 619 000 000€ through sponsors, shirt sales, ticket sales etc. So in the long run, having Messi generated money for both Barcelona and La Liga even if he had an insane salary. And Messi still has a good 2-3 years at the very top I’d say.

Did Messi at one point wanted OUT after the Catalan side’s humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals last year?

He was tired of Bartomeu building a shit squad and overpaid players and Bartomeu promised they can sell Messi if he doesn’t want to stay there anymore and after the 8-2 defeat he said he had enough and wanted to leave but Bartomeu forced him to stay, contradicting his earlier statements. Messi decided to stay because of his love for the club instead of forcing his way out because he did ’t wanna cause bad blood with the club, but he wanted Bartomeu to be held accountable for lying and doing bad business since 2014. Bartomeu then resigned but now his bad financial actions came back to haunt Barcelona and this is the situation. It’s all because of Bartomeu.

I recall Messi wanting out, but I think when both sides looked at his contract, they indicated Messi still had one year leave and HAD TO stay this last season.  Otherwise Messi would have left last year.  IIRC.

Thanks for some of the background info.

As one who does not follow soccer, I only get some of the bigger announcements.

And with an article this morning about his press conference:

“… Last year I wanted to leave, but this year I didn’t. I was always completely up front about everything and I have to leave the club I love.”

    As for the financial part:

Messi said he was blindsided by the news that he wouldn’t be able to return to the club due in part to La Liga’s salary cap restrictions and the club’s financial troubles. On Friday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that Messi was set to sign a new two-year contract that would have been paid out over five years. Messi confirmed that he had agreed to take a 50% pay cut in order to remain at the Catalan club.

    So, they me think of this via an example;

Messi was able to earn up to $165 million annually in salary and incentives…

    Before the next contract.

New contract: was $70 Million per year over five years while playing for only two.

Over five years that equals $350 Million dollars.

Over two years of playing time, that would be $175 Million dollars per year.

50% pay cut?  It does not look that way, and that it before incentives and endorsement deals.

I know various leagues in North America have rules with regards to salary cap calculations to prevent clubs from circumventing the salary cap, would charge the club the $175 Million per year as that is the playing time.

Ok, an article came out that finally explained the league’s objections.

How much does Lionel Messi earn? Why Barcelona legend’s weekly wage puts him out of almost every club’s reach

Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted the club’s finances are “far, far worse” than he anticipated, a day after announcing the shock departure of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine superstar’s exit is a huge blow to the Catalan giants who have sought to shift the blame onto La Liga despite years of their own financial mismanagement.

    How bad was the mismanagement?

Barcelona’s debts exceed 1.2 billion euros (£1bn), a plight exacerbated by the lack of revenue from empty stadiums during the pandemic on top of years of financial problems.

Ok.  That is a big problem.  And what of the contract that was rejected?

Laporta said the club and Messi had both wanted to sign a new contract, but salaries already represent 110 per cent of the club’s earnings and La Liga’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules prevented them from completing the deal.

110% of income! ! !  How are they expected to pay off the debt and make money for their members?
