DC Comics is once again doing a mega-crossover event.
This time, it is “Fear State”.
Fear State is a horror-themed Gotham City event that unifies plot threads started in DC’s 2021 publishing events, DC Future State and Infinite Frontier. Fear State not only continues the Scarecrow’s vision of a fear-controlled Gotham, but also Mayor Christopher Nakano’s mission to protect the city with his ground-breaking deal with the Magistrate.
Personally, I hated “Future State”.
The Joker War was just the prelude.
Crossover titles include:
And the one-shots:
#35 Comics in total.
But this turning Gotham City into not just a police state, but a private military-style enforcement zone fully sanctioned by those in authority.
A special fear toxin in the air making everyone fearful that was artificially created and released deliberately… (sounds too familiar to real life right now).
While this taking of a previous super-villain and pushing their levels up exponentially to make a scary super-villain (just like they did with Eclipso in 1992’s mini-series “Darkness Within”). I liked how they used the Annuals as the means of doing the crossovers that effected every DC superhero.
So this move to make The Scarecrow at the apex of his power to finally get the knowledge he has been after since his beginning, while not original, does bring another super-villain up a notch in power/influence.
But this having to get some titles I have no interest in getting (especially at retail price), is not something I like at all. Never have.
So while I enjoy the Scarecrow angle, I HATE the Magistrate part.
I just think DC Comics has gone over board with the mega-crossovers recently, and are pushing them too often.
And their rebooting too!
The New 52 = Rebirth = Infinite Frontiers… has been too often too quickly.
I hate the 5G initiative (I dropped the superboy(man) son of kal-el, I dropped the Aquaman The Becoming, I won’t touch Yara Flor Wonder Woman, etc.)
And the cost of the comics don’t help either.
And that is before the Black Label “More mature/adult” content.
I fear for the state of the Comic Book Industry.
They want new/more readers, but their new target audience does not care for comic books.
They are alienating their long term customers.
Their parent corporate owners don’t like publishing something with the lowest return on investments of their divisions/portfolios.
I wish the individual issues had on them some way of knowing what order to read them in.
Be it like back in the day when Superman have that icon with a number in it.
Or a part __ of __.
And even in the issues, it does not say “read ___ before reading this”…
As for the story;
I can see a parallel with real life here, where a group of people are fighting against evil are being demonized as a terrorist organization.
I can see a parallel with real life here, where a internet/media is spreading lies and those trying to get the truth out is censored.
I can see a parallel with real life here, where a group of people declare a form of martial law to control the city (CHAZ anyone?)
I can see a parallel with real life here, where the police lose their ability to patrol the streets and all hell breaks lose.
I can see a parallel with real life here, where the Magistrate program is like Big Tech, and how they manipulate everything around them

So the Scarecrow has been mixing his toxins with the aid of come Poison Ivy chemicals.
I can’t wait for the explanation of how Ivy’s personality was split into two beings, or how once her two selves re-combine again to make her whole.
And I don’t know if the story will end with Scarecrow winning, and that is what forces Batman to abandon Gotham City. That fact it has been reported Batman will be leaving Gotham is horrible.
I do like that twist where Dick and Barbara’s secret fear is of each other. Now THAT was good writing.
And I still can’t believe Bruce Wayne has not done more to regain His Corporation (and his family’s fortune), and how it has lead to him being so hamstrung on his fight against crime. I don’t think it was because Batman was getting too comfortable with how easily he was taking down criminals that he accepted this handicap willingly.
And the fact the feds have not decide to look into the financing/books for Wayne Enterprises, and how someone could be a multi-Billionairre just like that!
Just the tax implications (why wasn’t Mr.Fox paying all those taxes – reporting that income).
Or all those criminals/families whose funds were re-allocated during that whole story arc.
We are seeing how dangerous Simon Saint, and the Magistrate program is.
And after The Joker Presents a Puzzlebox (in which they are looking for who murdered… The Riddler?”), it looks like The Scarecrow aka Jonathan Crane, might have died too!
And we ended this week with Poison Ivy meeting… Poison Ivy!
Now how the two halves of the same plant can come back together….
On a side story, with Oracle/Batgirl (with the help of Nightwing) going after Oracle 2.0, we are seeing the groundworks for the new Batgirls series.
Out of everything happening in comics (and more specifically DC Comics), this is the only “bright-spot” I am seeing/reading right now.
Boy was this a poorly handled cross-over event.
The endings in each title was so out of wack with the listed order of reading, that you have to wonder if anyone was looking over this whole project to make sure the landing was not a complete and utter mess!
And I hear another “event” in the Bat-universe is set for early next year.
There have been so many Bat-related “events”, that they are becoming common place and doing “regular” Batman stories will be a big let-down. And that with so many bat “events”, you would think outside (non bat-family) superheroes would be lending a hand if things has become so bad.
It is becoming unsustainable for the bat-family/stories.
I find this event after event, pushing bat-related comics over all other DC properties, is a sign of desperation, IMO.
