Castlevania producer Adi Shankar recently shared details of his upcoming Devil May Cry Netflix series in an interview with IGN Japan. Among other things, Shankar divulged that the first season will include eight episodes, with more seasons planned to follow. Shankar also remarked, “The season 1 scripts are done. They are rad. I could not be more excited.” He goes on to confirm that the characters Vergil, Dante, and Lady will appear and jokingly announces that Chris Pratt won’t be in the series. Shankar praised the collaborative team at Capcom, saying it was “a dream” to work with them. Read a snippet of his comments here:
“Just like there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to adapting a book to a movie and just as there is not one right way to make a cover song, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to adapting, translating, or expanding games into another medium.”
I’ve never played the Devil May Cry games, and I don’t know much about them, but my gamer brother is a fan. We both loved the Castlevania series on Netflix, and that in itself is enough to get me interested in any similar series from this team. While I can’t speak to faithfulness in adaptation in most cases, Castlevania is the most thoughtful, exciting, emotional video game adaptation I’ve ever seen. Adi Shankar seems like a passionate individual, and while I wouldn’t normally trust Netflix to do anything right, I do expect them to follow the money. Castlevania was a huge critical hit and seemed popular with general audiences, which I’m sure is why they’ve greenlit this, as well as the Castlevania spin-off. It’s hard for me to extrapolate much about this project since I know so little about the games and Shankar as a creator, but I’ll watch it. I hope it’s half as good as Castlevania.
What do you make of Adi Shankar’s comments? Have you played the Devil May Cry games, and will you watch the series when it premieres? Let us know in the comments below!
Very cool. My brother has the games and I’ve seen brief snippets of him playing them, but I don’t know much. I’ll take your word for it.
I love Devil May Cry. Third game is a prequel to first, and I hope that first game will be last season; it would be perfect conclusion to series!
