Ash Barty Announces Early Retirement From Tennis

Australian tennis champion and world number one Ashleigh Barty has announced her retirement from the sport at just 25 years of age. In an emotional send-off, Barty said, “I’ll be retiring from tennis. It’s hard to say, but I’m so happy and I’m so ready, and I know at the moment, in my heart, for me as a person, this is right.”

After winning Wimbledon, she said she felt she had achieved her major goal in the sport. “To be able to win Wimbledon which was my dream, the one true dream that I wanted in tennis, that really changed my perspective.”

Barty’s career stats boast an impressive three Grand Slam titles along with 15 singles titles. Barty also sits fifth all-time in consecutive weeks at number one in the world, seventh all-time for total weeks at number one, and made nearly $24 million in prize money over her career.

Barty won the Australian Open earlier this year (2022) in a stunning comeback over Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6. Barty was down 1-5 in the second set before clawing out a tie-break win to be crowned Australian Open Champion.
