Yesterday, March 31st, Ewan McGregor and StarWars.com announced that Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on May 27th with two episodes. The previous release date for the series was two days earlier, on Wednesday the 25th, but it would presumably have premiered with only one episode. Check out the announcement here, from Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor:
Overall, I don’t really have many strong feelings about this announcement. I prefer Friday releases to Disney+’s usual Wednesdays, and I don’t mind waiting two days. Some people have been waiting years for this project to materialize, so I don’t see the harm in a couple more days. I think it’s embarrassing for the official Star Wars website to do the “Hello there” meme, though. Just because internet fans have turned every line and facial expression from the prequels into a meme doesn’t mean the corporations in charge of making the content should do so. I feel somewhat ambivalent about them releasing the first two episodes together, though. Bulk releases like this make the season feel shorter and render any potential theorizing and discussion around episode 1 irrelevant. I guess this is Lucasfilm and Disney’s way of making up for delaying the series even just two days, and I can understand that. It does make me wonder why they need those two days; perhaps something needs to be fixed in post-production? Maybe McGregor’s wristwatch or a water bottle snuck into a filmed scene?
Will you be watching Obi-Wan Kenobi on May 27th? What did you think of McGregor’s announcement video? Do you like it when conglomerates like Disney try to connect with us through internet lingo? Why do you think the series is being delayed? Let us know in the comments!
