The HBO series Westworld released a trailer for season 4 today and revealed a release date of June 26th. The upcoming season continues Dolores’s misadventures in the real world with familiar faces Maeve (Thandiwe Newton), Bernard/Arnold (Jeffrey Wright), and a replicant of the Man in Black (Ed Harris). Check out the new trailer here:
This trailer reminded me of two immutable truths: that Westworld is somehow still airing and that nobody really dies on this show. If a human dies, a replicant will be created, and if one of the androids dies, their mind will just be put in a new body. This trailer just consists of characters walking around and doesn’t really tell us anything. I absolutely loved season 1 of Westworld, and I was convinced it would be one of the best dramas of its generation on TV. The characters, particularly Dolores, captured my mind with their perpetual suffering and persistence. The mysteries were good, and the acting was impeccable. I even disagreed with the people who said it should have ended after season 1. Sure, most of the big questions had been answered, but the quality of season 2 episodes like “Kiksuya” speaks for itself.
However, after season 3, I don’t care about this show or its characters anymore. I don’t like the “real world” futuristic setting, and there aren’t consequences or stakes anymore. Dolores kept dying but not really, and the one interesting mystery of the Tessa Thompson robot’s identity had the most boring resolution possible. They tied up the Man in Black’s story by killing him and introducing yet another unkillable robot. And I thought they actually had killed Dolores; is that not what was implied? Yet here she is again in this trailer. Nothing is permanent in Westworld, so nothing matters. This is probably going to be the first season I skip outright.
