Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One Trailer Defies Death

Tom Cruise finally pulled his new face mask off because Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The seventh in the cinematic series adaptation of the classic spy TV show, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is about… I don’t know, spy stuff, I guess. Next to nothing has been revealed about the plot, including in this trailer, and I greatly appreciate that. Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the last two Mission: Impossible movies, returns for this third go-round with the Impossible Missions Force, and Tom Cruise, of course, returns as Ethan Hunt. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson are also back as the rest of Hunt’s spy team, with Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, and Frederick Schmidt reprising their roles from previous films too (one each, although for the life of me, I can’t remember Schmidt or his character from Fallout). Joining them are Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Esai Morales as the villain. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is being/has been filmed alongside the next installment and will hit theaters on July 14, 2023 (Bastille Day!). Hayley Atwell. That is all.

Okay, I’ll say some more stuff. This trailer was a great way to kick off the week (until you remember it’s still over a year away). The Mission: Impossible film series is kind of hit-and-miss with me and can actually be divided in half between what I like and what I don’t. The first one is three admittedly incredible spycraft sequences interspersed with long sections where a bunch of people sit in hotel rooms and read The Bible; the second is too goofy and wastes a great idea for a villain; the third is an incomprehensible mess that has maybe the worst shaky cam I’ve ever seen and, once again, a wasted villain. But the fourth, Ghost Protocol, is where these movies started to hit their stride, melding crazy action and stunts with stories that are just believable enough to hold together while still fully embracing the spy fantasy tone. (Maybe giving them subtitles instead of numbers was the secret all along.) And based on the trailer, this one looks like another wild ride with Cruise and company. I’m glad they’re keeping the plot close to the chest, and I hope they’re able to maintain that secrecy till the movie finally comes out, but there are hints to what’s going on sprinkled in the trailer. Henry Czerny talks about being able to “control the truth, the concepts of right and wrong,” and he seems to be opposed to Cruise. I wonder if this means the bad guys are essentially evil fact-checkers looking to control the flow of information on the internet. If so, that’s a very cool concept (if executed correctly; I just watched The Pentaverate, which is about something similar, and good Lord, what a disgustingly immoral message that series has), and it feels modern and relevant while maintaining high stakes. There’s also a lot of intrigue, action, and stunts to keep things cool and fun, all leading to Tom Cruise driving a motorcycle off a mountain; that guy has some brass ones. From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like another great time at the movies, buoyed by Tom Cruise’s limitless charm and Hayley Atwell’s devilish smile.

Speaking of which: Hayley Atwell. That is all.
