So I think most folks are aware of the Tua situation.  And I see a lot of talk by many folks on it.  But it makes me wonder.  If you have a grown adult willing to trade their health for millions of dollars to play football what do you do?  Tell them no?

Now what I am saying only goes if everything is on the up and up.  If we have some doctor or team negligence or maleficence that is something else entirely. But if you have someone who is injured in some way and says “I am fine send me out there” do you just tell them no and disregard that assuming they are still the best skill option?

I hear so much negative talk about the NFL is this or the NFL is that and sometimes it is.  But it should not be overlooked that it takes 2 too tango.  You have millions of people growing up dreaming of nothing but playing in the NFL.  They work towards it their entire life.  So you have hoards of people happily willing to trade health for money and fame.

I bring this up not to knock the players or the NFL.  I think it’s an interesting discussion to be had that you don’t normally hear all sides on.  I do feel for Tua and I hope he is OK.  He seems to be an injury prone guy and I personally rather see him retire now than suffer many injuries he is sorry for later on in life.  But that’s just my take on it.

What I find everyone is ignoring, is what of the players that CAUSE the harm?

There are clean hits, and then there are the dangerous hits.

Personally, I found the hit on Tua to have cross that line.  He deliberately made his head the first point of contact with the ground.

So why was the aggressor NOT penalized?

Why is the NFLPA not going after the player who INJURED another?

I thought the NFLPA was supposed to be there to PROTECT the players from getting harmed, yet they have done NOTHING to stop it.

It’s a violent sport dirty hit or not.  At the end of the day you have giant men running around at gazelle speeds with armor on.  Bad stuff will happen regardless. Either folks are OK with them volunteering for such a thing for money and fame or we aren’t.  If we aren’t then just don’t give them your money.

Maybe that is oversimplified but that is how I see it.  That’s not to say players should be abused or lied to, folks just need to understand the situation for what it is.

I do NOT give them my money and regret ever watching football or even being around football. It is barbaric, but well known that some men just want to run around and hit things and football and UFC and military gives an outlet for that. NFL is not even an impact sport. It’s a COLLISION sport. It’s like let’s watch men get hit by cars for fun. It’s equivalent.

The joke is the NFL stands for “Not For Long” because you are going to get injured for life. Same thing with boxing and Muay Thai. I grew up with the sport because of culture, but regret every watching it or knowing about it.

Violent yes, barbaric maybe.  While it is giant dudes hitting each other it is very much also based on skill, experience and instincts (just like boxing or the UFC).  Sure we could have a discussion on whether the NFL or the UFC should be actual things.  But the reality is you have lots of people willing to pay to see it and lots of people happily willing to trade possible injury for the privilege of playing.
