Andy Serkis recently spoke to Vanity Fair about his role in Andor. The actor discussed his admiration for Rogue One and clarified that his character in Andor, Kino Loy, has no connection to his role of Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy. Check out an excerpt here:
“It’s a difficult one because I’m sure that’s exactly what people will think,” Serkis remarked, referring to the theories that Loy has some connection to Snoke. “And why would they think other? I was a bit confused as to whether to do it or not, but it was purely because I love Rogue One.”
“I truly loved the grounding of that film in a world which felt both real and yet still felt epic. Also, I’m getting to play a character at the opposite end of the spectrum of a highly powerful Supreme Leader. [Kino Loy] is someone who is a real person in this world.”
I don’t like Rogue One much myself; I found it dull for the most part, and the Leia and Tarkin appearances were indulgent. I’m enjoying Andor much more because the characters are so well written and defined. When pre-existing characters like Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera do appear, it’s to serve the story rather than draw attention. I respect that Andy Serkis is a fan, though; I actually find it really cool when celebrities geek out just like us.
Is it sad that I didn’t even register the fact that Serkis was already in Star Wars? I thought his performance as Supreme Leader Snoke was good, but I only watched each film once, and I guess I’ve blocked it out of my memory. I already like his role in Andor more because it’s not a recreation of something from the original trilogy. Andor has proven it’s willing to create its own characters and ideas, as well as pay homage to the story of Star Wars.
