The world’s favorite plumber is almost at the castle. With just under a month before it hits theaters, Universal Pictures and Illumination have released a final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. An animated adaptation of the classic video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finds Mario transported to the Mushroom Kingdom, where he teams up with Princess Peach and her allies to save his brother Luigi from Bowser/King Koopa. Featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Jack Black, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will premiere on April 5, 2023. You can see the new trailer below:
The final trailer shows a bit more of the movie, especially the Mario Kart sequences, which look stellar based on this footage. There’s an excellent flow to them, with Mario bouncing from vehicle to vehicle as he races with his enemies. A lot of that is due to the animation, which looks magnificent; it hearkens back to some of the best of Pixar, with fluid action and expressive faces. It’s a nice follow-up to the earlier trailers, which showed off the level of detail down to the fibers on Mario’s overalls; now, we get to see all that in action. There also seems to be a streak of dark humor courtesy of Luma from Super Mario Galaxy. (I only know who this character is because Krista is excited.) This is likely for the adults in the audience, which makes sense; while animated movies obviously skew younger, a Mario movie is going to have a lot of grown-ups who grew up on the NES wanting to relive their childhoods. That clip reveals that Luigi’s capture by King Koopa and Mario’s desire to rescue him are major plot points. I’m still not sold on Chris Pratt as Mario, but Charlie Day sounds a little better in this one. But Jack Black is the one who really impresses me; I’d never guess he was Koopa if I didn’t already know. I won’t lie and say I’m on the edge of my seat over this, but it looks like it will probably satisfy mega Mario fans.
