I have been trolling through old movies for months now. Looking through movies and TV series from the 60’s to the 90’s. What has shocked me is how deep that pool is. Sure, not every title is a homerun but entertainment from decades past (in my opinion) was pretty chocked full of good content relatively speaking. Juxtapose that to the last 10-20 years where we celebrate with much fanfare anything that just does not completely suck. And we end up all but worshipping something that is even just pretty good.
I am not sure what it all means to be honest except to point to a void of talent in Hollywood. Although I do think that is the case because at some point that community became so exclusive and agenda driven they completely gatekept most new talent out especially as it related to new and radical ideas. So the machine that for decades found and created new stories and scripts just closed the gates and decided to let none but a few in.
At the end of the day either I think Hollywood dies out from lack success and gets rebuilt or other companies come in and take over the space.
But for now, most entertainment is just a dumpster fire.
I’ve been going back to stuff that in normal circumstances I wouldn’t have watched because I wasn’t interested in at the time, now that there’s hardly anything worth watching anymore on tv or film. I’m happier watching re-runs of cartoons that I grew up on such as ‘Recess’ than with a lot of entertainment Disney has been putting out lately. I hope that that isn’t the next show to be rebooted from them after what they did to the ‘Proud Family’ reboot.
You can still find good movies on the indie circuit. They’re limited by budget which can be both a curse and a blessing in that they generally concentrate on developing the story but don’t look as pretty as the big money Hollywood offerings.

Any fan of B-Grade Sci-Fi can tell you that.
By today’s standard, their special effects look horrible, but that was part of the charm… the innovations and using what is available and allow the plot/characters to tell the story.
Ray Harryhausen – we love his work, which was revolutionary at the time for his stop-motion.
B&W movies – so what if it has no color, the story and characters were good.
Silent films – have a charm of their own as pioneers of movie/entertainment.
Today’s too much of a going for the lowest common denominator. Agenda/narratives over stories and quality.
Some good ones from the indie circuit:
TV related, but maybe still applicable to how movies are so similar, too.
Yes TV is the same as movies at this point. Just totally void of new ideas and anything fresh with a heaping helping of THE MESSAGE.
At this point I just collect old stuff and watch it. Nine out 10 new shows or movies at this point is hot message garbage with the occasional gem. I refuse to watch the new junk or even entertain the thought that it could either be good or just not propaganda.
If anyone wants a recommendation of a excellent black and white film, I suggest this excellent one from 1940😄😉. Glad to finally see it mentioned on modern Batman films ‘Batman Vs Superman’ at last😂. I’m wondering if Tyrone might’ve made a good Batman back in the day.
For me, TV died when “Reality (BS) TV” came in.
When Entertainment Tonight stopped doing trailers and talking about upcoming productions and releases to reality (I need attention) narcissist, celebrity hit pieces, etc.
I think the last movie I saw in the theaters was Disney bad fan-fic Star Wars: the farce awakens (2015).
Since then, the only time I entered the lobby of a movie theater was to buy the extra-large popcorn so I can watch a movie at home with theater popcorn.
I never watched a MCU movie in the theaters. (I still have not watched captain grumpy/marvel nor endgame.)
I don’t have cable and I don’t do prescription/PPV movie streaming services.
The DC@$#@ is garbage. Nothing the new direction excites me. And the comics are all so close to me saying “enough is enough – I am done”
The only thing that has been announced that could excite me was the new Lord Of The Rings series (not the rings of woke) so long as it stays as true to the source material and has the same production level as Peter Jackson’s LotR’s trilogy.
Black Hole is a British film production, which is about human greed….
The film is less than 3 minutes long, and the audience is baffled by its ending!!!
It has won 4 international awards, the black hole in the human brain or the black hole of greed that will never be filled?
^That was really good. Just goes to show you don’t need a ton of money and an insanely long run times to make a quality film.
Thank your for the above suggestions on this. Will check out the movies you recommended.
Good food for thought. It makes me think about movies that those close to me watch on a regular basis.
1. My Cousin Vinny.
2. A Few Good Men.
3. Legally Blonde.
The best movies I grew up on were ones like these. If you watch them now, you immediately notice that there is little action and low budget. It’s all script driven and character driven with some good banter. Will say that Damon and Affleck come close to the mark. I read some things about 3 Men and a Baby the other day, but could not find what I was reading about the lady who wrote it. I definitely envy her talent. For a while, people I know watched The Hallmark Channel before it changed. Usually, it takes place on a pretty farm and has a couple with a dog and a horse.
And then, there is my favorite of all time, Groundhog Day. I haven’t seen it in a long time. Went over some clips and there are chuckles.
