Many English-speaking Canadians indifferent to French: federal research

Many English-speaking Canadians are indifferent to French even after 54 years of official bilingualism, says in-house federal research.

And what of French-speaking Canadians?  Are they indifferent to English?

“Less than a third of English speakers, 31%, said they were interested in French movies or music. Only 16% said they had a basic knowledge of French, enough to understand in routine situations like ordering a meal in a restaurant. Just 4% said they had attended a cultural event in French.”

And what of the French speakers in Quebec?

The report said 44% of English speakers said they did not count French speakers among their “friends, neighbours, relatives or co-workers.”

Could it be because we live in a MULTI-CULTURAL nation?

    South Asian (7.1%) Indigenous (5%) Chinese (4.7%) Black (4.3%) Arab (1.9%) Latin American (1.6%) Southeast Asian (1.1%) West Asian (1%) Korean (0.6%) Japanese (0.3%) Multiracial/Other (3.2%)

For language, we have (as of 2017):

The most frequently spoken language at home other than English or French was Mandarin, spoken by 641,100 Canadians. It was followed by Cantonese (594,705), Punjabi (568,375), Spanish (553,495), Tagalog (525,375) and Arabic (514,200).

English is the language of international businesses, as of now.

So unless you want to become a federal politician or a government civil servant, the need to be bilingual in English/French is next to nothing.

For businesses that deal in Quebec as the rest of the nation, their call centers (IMO) when you press 2-for French, you get transferred to a call center in Quebec anyway.

When I went to elementary school in Canada, the teachers clearly stated “while we are required to teach a class of french to you, you are not required to learn it.” So most did not.

Not being from Canada I do not have a dog in that fight.  However I am fully in support of everyone thinking their country is the best, loving it and feeling proud of the culture.  With that said, what the heck is the point to such a study?  Personally speaking I would be highly suspicious because Trudeau does nothing unless it benefits him or his admin.  That is not at all a slight against Canada, I feel the exact same about the USA.

As a Greek Canadian that lives in Montreal Quebec, I can confirm, we are indifferent to French. Quebec Quebec cities like Rimouski are a lot different. I can agree with both sides of the French VS English because we are the only Province that is French, there is another 1 but not like Quebec.
I think it’s important to learn both French & English, it will better you in many ways as opposed to only speaking 1 of them.
The Government is obsessed with the French Mandatory laws. It was really bad when Pauline Marois was leading the War on Anglos lol, she actually passed a bill that required Video Games & Movies to 1stly be released with a FRENCH only version or they would not allow stores to sell them (whatever was already on the shelves was fine, but not the new stock)
Companies lost so much money that they pressured the Government to change the law. This lasted for a bit over a year.
I remember going to BestBuy, they had the English Collectors edition of Halo with a big diorama for 140$ Canadian, then they had the exact same version but FRENCH ONLY (that meant the GAME was only in French, no options for languages) they were selling it for 40$ & they had like 6 copies lol.
It just sucks that you can’t work in Quebec unless you speak French or are willing to work manual labor or restaurants.
Canada is a very bizarre place. Very bizarre & Montreal is a Completely unique city of Quebec, in short, we are THE MOST ABUSED city by Corporations & big Companies. We have the highest burnout & depression rate brought on by employment stress. Bro, you have NO idea what we go through here, in Montreal.

      French Canada should split off.
