Tony Gilroy recently appeared on Entertainment Weekly’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast. He discussed Andor season 2, citing these differences from season 1:
“The expectations…The responsibility that we have to the characters we’ve set up… And our responsibility to bring it home efficiently. But mostly, it’s to [make it] pay off emotionally and stick the landing.”
When asked about the formation of the Rebellion:
“The Rebel Alliance that emerges on Yavin is almost like the Christian Democrats. It’s a consolidated, compromised group. But what happened to the original gangsters, and the hardcore people who built that road? What happened to them? And how do they integrate with [the Rebel Alliance]? That’ll be a lot of what we’re doing.”
Finally, he discusses the timespan covered:
“It’s a really interesting writing responsibility. We’re gonna use negative space in a really interesting way with these gaps. There will be four gaps. There will be the gap before you start [episode] one. And each block will have a year between it. The trick is to make it worth it.”
“We stay for a very short period of time. What’s the most important three, four, five days a year later?… And how do you tell it without doing any of the awkward exposition?”
Andor is quite possibly the best thing to come out of Disney Star Wars. I’m not sure it can rival Rebels or Clone Wars season 7 for my favorite, but it is the most consistent, and the writing is just next-level. I can’t wait for season 2. It’s a relief to hear Gilroy discuss the expectations for this season; unlike Kathleen Kennedy, he actually cares about satisfying fans, if not catering to their every whim. I’m intrigued to see what he means about the negative space; season 2 covering a 4-year span(as opposed to season 1’s single year) is my main concern going in.
But what do you think about Andor, Gilroy’s remarks, or anything else? Drop us a comment below!
