At the end of June, Ryan Murphy’s five-year Netflix deal expires, and Bloomberg was the first to report that he’s expected to return to working under what was once Fox’s entertainment division, which is now owned by Disney. Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, is a long-time friend and collaborator of Murphy’s from his Fox days. At Fox, Murphy created TV shows like Glee, Nip/Tuck, and American Horror Story. Murphy’s Netflix shows failed to catch on the way his Fox output did until Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022.
The deal isn’t completed or in place yet, but according to Bloomberg’s sources, it’s been in the works for a while, with talks beginning “late last year.” Most of the details were finalized before the beginning of the writers’ strike, and while few details are known, Disney will be able to buy Murphy out of royalties he’s owed for the shows of his that Disney now owns. This is likely a potential cost-saving measure for Disney, which is hurting financially and trying to save money wherever it can. Despite this impending move, Murphy will continue running Netflix shows like Monster and The Watcher.
