Greta Gerwig Will Adapt The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix

The New Yorker has revealed that Greta Gerwig (Ladybird, Little Women) will write and direct at least two movies adapting C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia books. These films are being made by Netflix, which obtained the IP in 2018. Gerwig is currently doing press for Barbie, her latest film. The Chronicles of Narnia was most recently adapted in a series of three movies for Disney and 20th Century Fox (the latter of which is now owned by Disney, meaning so are all three films), with the first three books – The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010), finding their way to theaters. In 2011, the rights lapsed; then, in 2018, a new deal was made between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company; this is the first time a single company has owned the movie rights to all seven Narnia books.

I didn’t care for Ladybird, and I haven’t seen any of Gerwig’s other work, so I can’t say if I think she’s a good fit for this material or not. I am cautiously excited to see Barbie, and if she gets that right, I’ll trust her with anything.

But what do you think? Let us know in the comments!
