At least 16 dead in Maine mass killing and police hunt for the shooter as residents take shelter

A man shot and killed at least 16 people in Maine and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents stayed locked in their homes Thursday under a shelter-in-place advisory, authorities said.

It has been awhile since the news reported on a “mass shooting”.

A police bulletin identified Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest…

    Who is he?

Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the U.S. Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.

So he knows tactics and guns, what else?

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base.

Another case of mental health mass shooting, why am I not surprised!

But for some reason, Robert Card’s race was never mentioned, as the news almost always if it is a white person to blare out the mass shooter is WHITE, while hiding if the shooting is non-white.

Other details I found stated this:

‘highly skilled’ Army ‘petroleum supply specialist’ who enlisted in December 2002. He has had no combat deployments.

is a 1st Class Sergeant, and has been awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defence Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and two Army Reserve Component Achievement medals.

Just because someone decides to kill a person or people does not mean it’s a mental health issue.  Could it be?  Sure.  But we need to understand that we have a morality crisis here as well in the USA and the west to some degree in general.

Many will want to blame the gun.  The gun does nothing unless someone commands it to.  The root issue here is not the chosen tool of death but that a person decided life is meaningless and killed people.

In a time when people celebrate abortion, assisted suicide, and are told not to have kids and that some people are better than others it should not be a shock that the value of life we all used to understand is being lost.

And that has dire consequences as we are experiencing. That is not necessarily a mental health issue.  Most of it I feel is a lack of purpose and hope issue.  Since society focuses on the self and emphasizes that the path to happiness is repeated episodes of self gratification people become miserable and unfulfilled in the long term. They come to THE question.  Is this is all life is, what is the point?

Without the love of others, loving someone else yourself like children and a family and having nor moral guiding principle such as God , there is actually no point.  But if you understand those are the things life is about, you will find contentment.

Living life for yourself is a recipe for sadness no matter what drugs you do or how many people you sleep with.

The man suspected of killing 18 people and wounding 13 in a shooting rampage in Lewiston, Maine, was found dead on Friday, ending a 48-hour manhunt…

      How did he die?

The body of Robert Card, 40, was discovered in the woods near the neighbouring town of Lisbon…

Card died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Commissioner Mike Sauschuck of Maine’s Department of Public Safety.

I also saw someone report the trigger of this was… revenge on some deaf employees where Card also worked.  They did not provide any additional reason as it why/what did they do to be the object of his revenge, etc.

“I also saw someone report the trigger of this was… revenge on some deaf employees where Card also worked.”

It’s really of no consequence why.  I think the motivation talk just takes away from the root cause which is we have a severe issue with morality right now. But with that said I think it’s very much human nature to wonder why and clearly if it’s an organized terrorism thing then that needs to be known as well.

But again, the problem here is not at all the gun.  It’s not mental health. It’s the absolute lack of any value on life.

        #308929

        It’s not mental health.

He had constant manic episodes, was in a state of paranoia and was hearing voices. That’s usually not due to ”lack of values on life”.

Why can’t people with obvious mental health problems be red flagged and be restricted from owning firearms for their own and others safety?

In most cases of mass shootings like this the culprit is ready or even willing to die. This guy shot himself in the woods when no one else managed to put him down.

Having more people with firearms, tightened security etc. would not have stopped him from pulling up and shooting people. He had an obvious death wish. One could even argue that it motivates people like this since they know they know they clapped by someone and they can die a martyr.

Removing his access to firearms could have at least decreased the death toll since it is near impossible to kill almost 20 people with a knife or your hands. Add sufficient mental health aid and it possibly could have prevented it.

But nope, these can not be discussed seriously, just add bulletproof vests and guns to kids and teachers at school and so on. It’s like having the issue of your bread toaster being on maximum power and burning your bread but instead of turning the heat down you put the toaster in the freezer expecting it to solve the problem.

It has been awhile since the news reported on a “mass shooting”.

they occur daily so only the ones with significant death tolls are reported

“He had constant manic episodes, was in a state of paranoia and was hearing voices. That’s usually not due to ”lack of values on life”.”

I was speaking in generalities and not necessarily about this specific case.  But ultimately lack of value on life, crazy or not is the issue.  If a person places value on others you don’t murder them.

“In most cases of mass shootings like this the culprit is ready or even willing to die”

No.  You don’t decide to murder others because you want to kill yourself.  That’s basing causation on solely correlation. While these things both can be true simultaneously that’s does not have to be the case.

” He had an obvious death wish”

If that was his sole motivation he would have shot himself and that would be the end of it.  He wanted to harm and kill others.  Suicidal and homicidal are 2 different words.

“Removing his access to firearms could have at least decreased the death toll since it is near impossible to kill almost 20 people with a knife or your hands. Add sufficient mental health aid and it possibly could have prevented it.”

You do know that killing people is against the law right?  That did not seem to stop him.  So I doubt throwing an additional law at him would have prevented anything. Think of the times in the past someone has bombed something in the US.  Explosives in general are illegal to possess and highly regulated.  Yet these things happened.

“It’s like having the issue of your bread toaster being on maximum power and burning your bread but instead of turning the heat down you put the toaster in the freezer expecting it to solve the problem.”

No, it’s far more accurate to say that you repeatedly burn your bread and even though you have bought several new refrigerators the bread keeps burning and you don’t understand why because the refrigerator sales guy swears it will solve the problem.

The implement of death is not at all the issue.  The root cause is that you have people willing to harm others.  That is a societal ill, a problem with morality.  Whether they use a gun, a knife or a claw hammer is of little no consequence.  Sure, a gun is more efficient at killing people but that is not at all the root of the problem.  There are many places where there are no guns but they have issues with mass stabbings or problems with someone mowing folks over with a vehicle.

          #309042

But ultimately lack of value on life, crazy or not is the issue.  If a person places value on others you don’t murder them.

if a person is mentally stable, they usually don’t kill people. The most common reason for mass shootings are usually mental illness, radical ideologies or a mixture of both of them.

No.  You don’t decide to murder others because you want to kill yourself.  That’s basing causation on solely correlation. While these things both can be true simultaneously that’s does not have to be the case.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I’m not saying suicidal people want to kill others, I’m saying people who go out on the streets to shoot as many people as they can are fully aware that they will get clapped down and are prepared for it. Either because they are actually suicidal, or because they think their mission is worth getting killed for. If someone is spraying 10-15 people, they are fully committed to the act and strapped security, police or civilians will not cause them to stop and they tend to die from bullets themselves. Which is why I believe adding more firearms and security to patrol or protect is not gonna help when a mass shooter enters because they are absolutely prepared to die for their cause.

You do know that killing people is against the law right?  That did not seem to stop him.  So I doubt throwing an additional law at him would have prevented anything.

I’m not saying I have a solution to stop mass shootings from ever happening, but I do believe putting more effort in recognizing and taking care of mental illness and not letting a mentally ill person have access to firearms would prevent a lot of them. You would agree that a mentally unstable person strapped with firearms is not a good idea?

I feel like many people on this forum arrived at the right conclusion but with wrong methods after the transgender shooting earlier this year. Some people from this forum discussed taking guns away from trans people becsuse they are ”mentally ill”. I think that’s as close as you can get to the answer but through what I consider transphobic measures, but the end goal of mentally ill people should receive care and should not be allowed to carry firearms.

If that was his sole motivation he would have shot himself and that would be the end of it.  He wanted to harm and kill others.  Suicidal and homicidal are 2 different words.

I’m not saying it was his sole motivation, I’m saying he was mentally ill, unpredicatble and shoukd not have had access to firearms. Proper mental care, maybe it could have been prevented all together. Restricting his access to firearms, maybe he would’ve gone on a rampage but only managed to kill 1-5 people with a knife. If you try to massmurder people with a knife, after the first or second victim people have already noticed and are running away. And a knife attacker can be defended against by simply having an object between you. With the access to a firearm he can just go ra ta ta ta and just like that there’s 20 dead people.

Now, I’m not saying everyone should have their guns taken away. Everyone knows that doesn’t work. And I don’t have one solution which stops all shootings. But I am 100% sure that by implementing affordable and precise mental health care and red flagging & restricting access to firearms to mentally ill people, as well as proper and strict background checks for people purchasing firearms and limiting what kind of firearms can be purchased depending on the purpose, people dying from mass shootings is gonna be significantly lower.

It’s not about any political agenda, it can be summarizes to something as simple as do not let crazy people have instruments which can murder 20 people in the matter of seconds.

And it’s so frustrating when after every mass shooter the solution changes from the people on the right. More security to schools, guns to teachers, bulletproof vests to school children, better door locks and bulletproof doors at schools, suddenly it’s ”oh no it’s actually trans ideology” after one trans shooting, then return back to the normal ”oh actually we just need more guns”. It’s like instead of trying to prevent it from happening, it’s ”it’s gonna happen anywa so might as well strap up the kids”.

This is what I mean by the toaster metaphor, instead of addressing the actual issue, people come up with this wacky solutions with putting the tosster in a freezer, bury it with ice, put it near the AC and so on.

“if a person is mentally stable, they usually don’t kill people. The most common reason for mass shootings are usually mental illness, radical ideologies or a mixture of both of them.”

I disagree with that assertion.  Mental illness can be a factor but it is always the first card that comes out. I think this is gravitated to as it is hard to accept you just have some portion of the population perfectly OK with harming people.  I believe this is often an ideological thing because the only other explanation is a lack or morality and then that causes morality to become something you cannot ignore even though many people try.

Radical ideologies are simply just a different set of morals unless your premise is that is also mental illness?  Are the thousands of people in Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban all mentally unstable?

” Which is why I believe adding more firearms and security to patrol or protect is not gonna help when a mass shooter enters because they are absolutely prepared to die for their cause.”

I tend to agree with this.  Arming more people could help but it does not really solve anything.  Neither does more law enforcement. Law enforcement does not prevent crime, it only reacts to it once it has happened.   Again, the root cause is that you have lost enough moral fiber where some portion of the population has no problem with hurting others.

” but I do believe putting more effort in recognizing and taking care of mental illness and not letting a mentally ill person have access to firearms would prevent a lot of them. You would agree that a mentally unstable person strapped with firearms is not a good idea?”

So you are logically expecting a mentally ill person whom has already decided to break the law by murdering other people to not obtain a firearm illegally?  That has almost no chance of helping anything.  Again the problem is not so much mental illness but a waning collective moral code.  This is due to decades of drumming God out of everything and a vast push for moral relativism.  However, I will agree that mental health is in an overall issue.  But we should be FAR MORE concerned about why there are so many people in this state now. I only ever hear politicians asking for more money to address the problem of treatment.  I see almost no one asking why this is the case.  That is like being more concerned about mopping up the blood on the floor versus closing the wound in your jugular.

“Some people from this forum discussed taking guns away from trans people becsuse they are ”mentally ill”

I agree that anyone suffering from gender dysphoria is mentally ill.  I don’t use the term transgender anymore as that has been rendered meaningless via overuse as a propaganda word.  But if you say any mental illness means no guns, then that would have to be the case here as well.  But I don’t advocate for that.  It’s does not matter.  It is not the root cause and if we decide to take away weapons from anyone with a mental situation then 50% or more will fall into this category easily.  And in that case I care squat about that person believing they were in the wrong body.  The atrocity that occurred on that day, the gender or other such things are not what matters.  The focus on that I believe is wasted energy.

“It’s not about any political agenda, it can be summarizes to something as simple as do not let crazy people have instruments which can murder 20 people in the matter of seconds.”

I can understand and appreciate that.  And overall I agree with you.  But as everything, it ends up a political football used to play a game where no one cares about the people and all that matters is winning.

Again though.  You are NOT going to stop “crazy” people from having weapons.  You can force them to have them illegally but that matters not at all if they shoot people with a legal gun or an illegal one.  Look at the UK and others parts of Europe.  They have ZERO guns, but they have a lot of stabbings and ones often referred to as mass stabbings.

And that is my entire point.  The root cause is not the chosen implement of death.  People in Europe have been mass run over by vehicles a number of times.  No gun required to slaughter many people.  So trying to restrict access to one form of death implement will never help.  You must attack the actual illness and not a symptom.   Yes, anyone whom is straight up insane should be restricted.  They should be in an asylum so they cannot harm folks and treatment can be attempted.  But you HAVE to solve the moral crisis to make this issue better.

            #309155

Radical ideologies are simply just a different set of morals unless your premise is that is also mental illness?  Are the thousands of people in Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban all mentally unstable?

No I don’t consider it, which is why I said mental illness, radicalization or a mixture of both. Simply radicalization (statistically most often religious or far right extremism) is often a common reason for mass shootings. But it can be purely mental health like this one, or a mixture of both where you think you hear voices from a divine force which commands you to act upon it.

So you are logically expecting a mentally ill person whom has already decided to break the law by murdering other people to not obtain a firearm illegally?  That has almost no chance of helping anything.

I don’t really understand the notion of the attitude like ”it’s not gonna solve all the problems so why even bother” and then continue to live with the shit that is going on. It’s like saying you can get cancer from anything so why bother stop smoking. Illegally purchased firearms are way harder to get, some mentally ill teenagers don’t necessarily even know how to get a hold on one without connections and are in general way more expensive. People in manic episodes tend to act very spontaneously when they are on their highs and going through a long process is usually not favorable. It’s a different case if they already have a firearm at home and are ready to go.

What I am trying to say is, why is it such a bad idea to at least try to make it as difficult as possible for mentally unstable people to have access to tools made for taking other living creatures lives? It won’t stop them from getting firearms illegally but that process is way more expensive and complicated, so it would at least reduce the number of spontaneous mentally ill shooters, which there is quite a high number of.

This is due to decades of drumming God out of everything and a vast push for moral relativism.

I would like to hear something to back this up, what makes you think of that? From what I understand, religious countries tend to have more shootings. Middle-East has street and mosque shootings as well as suicide bombings, the USA is the USA, Brazil and Mexico have very high percentage of religious people and it’s just warfare on the streets. Northern, Central Europe and East Asia like Korea and Japan are far from religious and keeps declining in rate of religious people and they tend to be the safest places with the least shootings and killings in general. Finland has the highest percentage of gun ownership out of those countries, followed by Norway, and not surprisingly they also have the highest rate of gun violence. Go figure.

I agree that anyone suffering from gender dysphoria is mentally ill.

If transgendered people are considered mentally ill then I would have to consider religious people mentally ill also. And they are statistically speaking significantly more likely to be dangerous with a firearm.

Look at the UK and others parts of Europe.  They have ZERO guns, but they have a lot of stabbings and ones often referred to as mass stabbings.

Well it’s a relief they don’t have guns right? Because in the case of the UK, the mortality rate in stabbing incidents is only 0,8 per 100 000 even though there are 100-120 knife offences per 100 000 depending on the area. The survival rate from knife attacks is actually incredibly high because the culprit has to come close enough, in most cases the victims can run away or even fight back and wrestle. With guns, I don’t wanna imagine what the mortality number woukd be. Also, the USA has more stabbings per capita than the UK.

“Simply radicalization (statistically most often religious or far right extremism) is often a common reason for mass shootings.”

You are such a propagandist.  But at least you are consistent.

Yes.  I am certain Mao, Stalin, the Khmer Rouge, Hitler, and Che Guevara were all religious right wing extremists.

“I don’t really understand the notion of the attitude like ”it’s not gonna solve all the problems so why even bother”

That’s not my claim at all.  My claim is that it helps nothing in the least and spending time on it is counterproductive as you are not addressing the root cause.   It’s akin to spending time on getting buckets to catch the blood from your open jugular instead of mopping it up because the buckets save time vs. mopping.

“Illegally purchased firearms are way harder to get,”

You have just demonstrated you know nothing about what you speak.  That violates reality equally as bad as saying a man can turn into a woman.

“People in manic episodes tend to act very spontaneously when they are on their highs”

So is your assertion that only bi-polar folks are mentally ill?  Or that only bi-polar folks harm people?

“What I am trying to say is, why is it such a bad idea to at least try to make it as difficult as possible for mentally unstable people to have access to tools made for taking other living creatures lives? It won’t stop them from getting firearms illegally but that process is way more expensive and complicated,”

Again you demonstrate that you know little about what you speak.  Getting an illegal firearm is cheaper and easier and that is because of the regulations in place for people who actually follow the law.

What you are advocating for does almost nothing.  It is a concentration on a making killing people slightly less efficient in some circumstances.  This takes time away from the actual root cause which is mental illness and a lack of morality and or value on life.  This idea that anyone whom wishes to kill people is mentally ill is also silly.  At what point do we switch from murder to mentally ill?  Is it 2 deaths?  3 ?  4? 10+?

“I would like to hear something to back this up, what makes you think of that?”

In the west, God has been disappeared  from everything quite intentionally since at least the late 80’s.  And at the same time we have arrived at this point where if someone has a desire, a belief or a feeling it should be considered valid simply because they have it.  This began with the “all cultures all equal” thought process.   Things have gone downhill due to this because there is no longer a common morality or a common social contract.  If morality (a standard for human behavior) becomes subjective then it ceases to exist.  25+ years ago female genital  mutilation (FMG) was (in the west) universally considered abhorrent and their were many campaigns against it.   Now, not lopping off your kids no-no parts is considered bigotry.

“From what I understand, religious countries tend to have more shootings”

I can state countries with brown people tend to have way more bombings than countries that don’t.  There might be a kernel of truth to that but that does not mean brown people = bombs.  I know you hate religion.  You have made this clear.  God loves you in spite of that.

“If transgendered people are considered mentally ill then I would have to consider religious people mentally ill also.

Well according to the DSM  or prior versions of it for decades, transgender = dysphoria = mental illness.  I  have never heard anyone claim religion was mental illness.

” And they are statistically speaking significantly more likely to be dangerous with a firearm””

Dude, please.  I can state the Atlanta Falcons were the spawns of Satan and cursed by John Madden (RIP) because I hate them but that does not make it true.  But seriously I hate the Falcons.

“Well it’s a relief they don’t have guns right?”

If I had an alcoholism problem I probably should not be so concerned that whiskey is worse for me than beer than the thought I should not drink at all.

“Also, the USA has more stabbings per capita than the UK.”

That’s very America-phobic of you.  It seems to be actually the USA .06% and the UK is .08% per 100k (2019 data from the UN).  You can slander the USA however you wish but it has nothing to do with the fact that the method of murder is of little consequence vs. the  fact that more people are willing to murder.

The debate continues. Thanks all for posting.

I joined Timcast in order to watch Infringed: A Film by Lauren Southern. It’s a documentary film about gun rights in America.

There was a book called In Defend Of The Second Amendment by Larry Correia and he said one of the most important thing you can do for your own God-given rights is simply foster, nurture and be a part of the gun culture. Since Lauren and Tim have done that, I chose to support them.

Excellent. Tim Pool (among others) is coming at this all at the correct angle.  They are freely debating, being truth spreaders and intentionally trying to affect culture organically through those means.  In contrast the radicals do nothing but apply propaganda, spread lies, use doublespeak and censor.  The difference is the radicals will tell you anything to fool you and fear you into agreeing, folks like Pool just offer you the correct information.

Tim Pool whether people agree with what he says or not is doing more to help the country than any politician I can think of.  We need many such people in communities doing the same thing.

I am very open to change my mind if you have anything else than namecslling to provide. I can show you what stats ADL and Barnard Political Science suggestsIMG_2580

Yes.  I am certain Mao, Stalin, the Khmer Rouge, Hitler, and Che Guevara were all religious right wing extremists.

well none of them are really actively contributing in modern USA, but Hitler was kinda right wing extremist with his ethnic cleansing plan.

My claim is that it helps nothing in the least and spending time on it is counterproductive as you are not addressing the root cause.

what exactly are your solutions and root cause? I think I have pretty clearly stated that the easy access to firearms, handwaving mental illness and not red flagging mentally ill people with firearms as pretty significant causes and given concrete solution options. You’ve thus far provided only vague explanations about not being religious enough, which I believe to be statistically insignificant as not only are less religious countries dealing with this problem, but religious extremism in fact is a negative contributor.

You have just demonstrated you know nothing about what you speak.

Again, I am willing to shift my position and I admit I am by no means an expert in illegal firearm purchases, but as far as I know the price on the black market rises if it is harder to access due to regulations. You are more than welcome to prove me wrong instead of attacking.

So is your assertion that only bi-polar folks are mentally ill?  Or that only bi-polar folks harm people?

No, there are other mental illnesses for sure. And no, I do not believe only bi-polar people harm people.

                g. 3 ?  4? 10+?

hard to say when it has never been implemented, tends to work pretty smoothly in other countries. And I have been massively promoting care for mental health. Not all killers are mentally ill but mental illnesses and extremisms make a big proportion of murders. Now tell me, what is your solution? Pray harder?

In the west, God has been disappeared  from everything quite intentionally since at least the late 80’s

How can this been seen statistically, or proven, that lack of God leads to this? Other countries with medical care for lemtal illnesses and not having guns in every corner are doing pretty fine despite declining heavily in religion.

I can state countries with brown people tend to have way more bombings than countries that don’t.  There might be a kernel of truth to that but that does not mean brown people = bombs.

do you believe skin color has some affect on tendency to bomb? Do these people scream ”I love being brown” when they bomb, or do they scream ”God is great”? As stated, a lot of killings and even wars have been executed due to religious extremism. Skin color can of course play a role, I mean a lot of mass shootings are done by white supremacists and some by black supremacists. But people bombing in the middle east usually have a religious motive, not racial.

I just find it odd  and completely backwards that when the issue is people getting blasted by firearms and often by people yelling God is great and having a religious extremism motive, y’all somehow come to the solution that we actually need more guns and religion.

Well according to the DSM  or prior versions of it for decades, transgender = dysphoria = mental illness.  I  have never heard anyone claim religion was mental illness.

Yeah and homosexuality used to be considered mental illness too. Priests tried to pray away the gayness and lobotomy was performed. Glad we have moved on from the dark times. Do you consider people hearing voices from God mentally stable?

Dude, please.  I can state the Atlanta Falcons were the spawns of Satan and cursed by John Madden (RIP) because I hate them but that does not make it true.  But seriously I hate the Falcons.

Wait, do you believe transgenders commit more mass killings than religious people?

If I had an alcoholism problem I probably should not be so concerned that whiskey is worse for me than beer than the thought I should not drink at all.

No, but if there was a person trying to kill me I would be way less worried seeing a fat unathletic person with a knife who is across the street which provides me the chance to run away or in the worst case pick up any object to defend myself, than if there was the same person fully strapped with an automatic rifle with red dot sight and extended mags ready to blast me with holes. This is just a silly argument, and you know it. Which do you think is easier: killing 20 people with a kitchen knife or a full auto firearm? And which one gives you a chance to fight back or escape?

According to Science Daily, 33% of people hospitalized with wounds from gunshots die, while only 7.7% of people with stab wounds die. Which gives you a 4 times better chance to survive AFTER getting hurt, adding to the fact that against knives it is way easier to avoid getting hurt in the first place.

I might be wrong, I would like to see the study which I couldn’t find. The one I found was from Euronews which suggested 0.48 for the UK and 0.49 for the USA. But either way, the numbers are really close which means that there really isn’t a phenomenon where the UK has insane mass stabbings becsuse they don’t have firearms, it’s just that the USA has pretty much similar numbers AND the firearm issue
