Get set for more Miyagi-Do action because a new Karate Kid movie is on the way. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Ralph Macchio will return as Daniel LaRusso in a new Karate Kid film, and he will be joined by Jackie Chan, who starred in a remake/reboot/something in 2010. The film will merge the two versions of the movie, I guess making it so that they occur in the same universe. The new Karate Kid will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle and written by Rob Lieber, and has a release date of December 13, 2024. Macchio and Chan appeared in a video announcing a search for the new Karate Kid, which you can see below:
I don’t mean to be a buzzkill, but can we maybe not? I adore Cobra Kai, but I don’t want it to be the first in a huge Karate Kid universe resurgence. Just let it exist on its own and end when it’s time, which it appears to be doing since next season will be its last. It achieved what almost no franchise revivals do and became great – and, if I’m being honest, eclipsed even the original film. But now, we’re getting a new movie with a new kid learning either karate or kung fu. (I didn’t see the remake, but apparently, it takes place in China and is about kung fu instead of… you know… karate.) What is the point of this? Didn’t they just set up a whole bunch of new kids who’ve been trained by Daniel? We’re going to do all this again? How are they going to make it different this time? We’ve seen Daniel (and Johnny Lawrence) clash with the modern world and prove their old methods are still valuable. What else is there to say? That Cobra Kai not only works but is as great as it turned out to be is a miracle; they should count their blessings and leave it at that. But this is Hollywood, where dead horses will be zombified just to be beaten again.
With good writing, anything is possible. The writing trio of Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg did an incredible job on Cobra Kai and I would argue that this brand did better than Star Wars at continuity and reboot.
In the spirit of Woke, I naturally figured there would be a spinoff called The Capoeira Kid and it would be an Afro-Brazilian show and there would be more material to work with because of the Samba music and it could draw on both fighting movies and dance movies with like rival dance studio dojos.
Miyagi-Do vs. Cobra Kai really did come off to me like Jedi vs. Sith and it’s something that could go on and on. Some were talking about a prequel show of Young Kreese after Vietnam. The thing about athletics and martial arts is that it is a lot like pro sports, and although Miyagi might even be better than Yoda as an old wise figure, this is a young man’s game.
Most pro athletes retire at about age 36 at the latest. the truth is that the real span of an athletic career is probably about 4 years. This is a problem in Hollywood because by the time most actors get their chops they are already in their 40s or 50s. Geezer martial arts or boxing is kind of sad. The elderly just don’t have the hormones. Their old bodies don’t have the testosterone to really compete.
Going to have to wait for the trailer. In Cobra Kai, that scene where Daniel mistakes the fisherman for Miyagi was incredibly sentimental, so we will have to see what it looks like and it all depends on good writing.
