HBO Max 2024 Trailer Teases New and Returning Shows

2023 is coming to a close, and Hollywood is trying to get people excited for next year. To that end, HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming 2024 shows, showcasing some new hopefuls and returning favorites. It’s essentially a sizzle reel, which you can check out below:

The returning shows don’t mean much to me, at least right now. I didn’t see the first season of House of the Dragon because I thought a series about Targaryen history sounded redundant, but people seem to love it, so I may have to give it a try at some point. I’ll probably watch season 4 of True Detective just in case it’s good, but so far, the only one I liked was season 1. I have no interest in Pretty Little Liars, the Sex and the City sequel, Euphoria, or The Last of Us. And I’ve never seen Curb Your Enthusiasm, even though I’d probably like it; it amazes me that Curb is still on the air, surpassing Seinfeld in number of seasons (though not episodes – yet). I also have to check out Tokyo Vice because it looks very cool. As for the new stuff, I’m really looking forward to The Regime, a political satire about a fictional European country going through a tumultuous revolution; Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant star, with the great Stephen Frears directing some episodes. The Sympathizer looks… odd, but Park Chan-Wook was behind the excellent John le Carré adaptation The Little Drummer Girl, so I’ll see if he can make another great spy thriller. Industry looks boring. The Franchise feels like the concept somebody was going to think of sooner or later: a spoof of how superhero movies are made. Hacks sounds like a potentially funny send-up of cancel culture and woke comedy; Jean Smart playing the lead helps. Welcome to Derry sounds like a dumb idea to me; are they just going to show It rip through Derry a bunch of times? And, finally, I’m not interested in The Penguin; I didn’t care for The Batman, and I thought Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot was a caricature more than a character. So, this is a mixed bag, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing; there’s probably something for everyone in there, and chances are at least a couple of them will be good. HBO still makes some quality shows on occasion.
