I am a huge fan of physical media. And I like shows but I am more a fan of great movies.
For those of you also a fan of physical media there are good places to get it from.
Is Amazon one? Yes. Is it the only place? No.
Another great resource (believe it or not) is Walmart online.
If you track physical releases you will notice that those are not necessarily going away. In fact it seems they are mining titles in reverse and popular new stuff is released BUT also popular old stuff. Especially in 4k.
I use this to keep tabs on those.
And yes, Netflix killed off it’s DVD service late last year but there are others. Here is one I frequent.

Ya, I am a physical media person as well. I really hate this all digital push. I am 100000% against it.
I also use https://www.blu-ray.com/ to keep track of all my stuff so I know what I have if I am out somewhere and cant remember if I have it or not. It’s a nice site to keep your collection handy. Iv’e used that site for many years. I am a contributor on that site as well.
That’s interesting, I did not know it did that.
I use EMDB for that purpose but it’s a local app on your PC but I catalog everything with it.
I also like to have a physical copy of something that I really like. If I watch something on digital and I really like it I try and see if it’s available. Especially anime since anime is notoriously difficult to get sometimes in the UK (our distribution for anime is horrible😢). I usually use digital media to see if something is worth buying a film or tv show on physical. Kind of like a library.
The other thing about physical beyond just not having to hope your platform keeps a title around, is it cannot be edited. Titles are being edited retroactively to scrub out and change “offensive” things. I like possessing titles so that cannot happen and I don’t have to worry about if Amazon or Netflix or whoever deicides to no longer have that movie on their platform.
There is much to be said for possessing media in physical or digital format. If you posses it, it cannot be edited nor can your “license” for it be removed.
It makes me happy to see older titles getting 4K love. Although often they are stinky and the upscaling is bad. But sometimes they come off gorgeous. It depends on the source recording often. I have “Unforgiven” in 4k. That’s from 1992. In 4k it is wonderfully pretty as there are many awesome backgrounds. That’s probably because Eastwood had it recorded at the highest quality at the time.
I think the oldest films I have on blue-ray (not 4K since I don’t have a 4K blue-ray player or TV) is either ‘Dune’ ’84 or ‘Ghostbusters’ ’84. Both are brilliant on blue-ray both sound effects-wise.
Having said that, I’ve got OG Disney Snow White on blue-ray if you’re on about animated films. Again, the quality is excellent on blue-ray. Better than anything Zegler will be in that’s for sure😏…
You make a great point there. I have seen a number of instances where a good quality Blu-Ray looks better than a poorly made 4K disc. It just depends on how things were originally recorded and handled post filming.
Now I NEVER buy/rent animated films in 4K. It’s a useless endeavor as animation (drawn or otherwise) does not have that kind of detail. Now I say never. I have 1, “The Transformers The Movie” from 1986. I thought it was kinda sarcastic and nostalgic to have it in 4K.
The overall thing here folks don’t realize is the movie watch from Amazon or Netflix (or wherever) is technically 1080p or 4K as it is in the required resolution. But those streamed titles generally look nothing like what’s on the disc. They compress the heck out of movies to save space and bandwidth. That is as expected so that streaming works well. But it should be kept in mind that’s not at all what a disc looks like.
For example, a 4K movie from a streaming platform is generally about 15-20GB in total size. The same movie on a disc would be 50-90GB. Now file size alone is not a measure of quality or detail but with that sort of discrepancy you can so there is a huge difference.
I completely forgot that I had OG Star Wars trilogy on blue-ray as well as the prequels🤣🤯. You can change ‘Dune’ ’84 and ‘Ghostbusters’ ’84 to ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ to the oldest film I’ve got on blue-ray😂!
I only get films on blue-ray if I think they’re worthy of a HD viewing. Most of them are MCU, DC and Disney animation titles. I think the last blue-ray I got was the Barbie film if you’re on about live-action. Having said that, it was more “pink-ray” than blue-ray😂. Last animation I got on blue-ray was the 1995 anime ‘Neon Genesis’ when it was finally down to half-price.
In fact, the first blue-ray I actually got (and still have and I’m not ashamed of it😂) is James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ film. And yes I have the second film on blue-ray too but had to wait for it to come out on blue-ray as there was NO WAY I was was going to sit in the cinema for 3hrs!
Don’t apologize, I like the Avatar films. Are they the greatest movies ever made? No. But so what, they are fun to watch. Yeah, there is a little bit of propaganda in there but so small I just ignore it. The first film is fairly dead on about human nature.
I have both films in 4k. They look pretty good and I like watching them.
I don’t care if other people think a movie is bad. It only matters if I do.
I like watching “Battlefield Earth” known commonly as the absolute worst movie ever made. :)
One of the things that I liked about ‘Way of Water’ was that the CGI was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than ‘The Little Mermaid’ (2023). I watch it so that I can point and laugh at how excellent the underwater CGI is compared to the Little Mermaid mess.
I’m also like that with Barbie. There was some stuff in it that I liked but I didn’t like the ending to that film…and I most certainly didn’t like America’s character’s daughter in it. I’m not a Barbie fan (I only wanted to watch this because I really like Margot Robbie) but even my eyebrows were raised at that kid’s comments. “You make women feel bad about themselves!” Wtf girl??? Even none-Barbie fan me can tell you that that’s not true🙄! Then there’s the whole patriarchy nonsense that made me want to bang my head against something after the third time hearing about it that I didn’t like either. As much as I think the film was ok, I still had my issues with it but not enough to regret getting a physical copy of it.
If you like it enough to buy it there is nothing wrong with that. I never have issues with what other folks like, I just detest when they attempt to enforce that on others. Ironically almost always in the name of “tolerance”.
The patriarchy is real! And it will dominate you women again! Our undercover agents (trans-women) are infiltrating all your spaces and winning your contests. We will have you back in the kitchen in no time! Our double-agents are working even better than planned!
:)
I got the new Collectors Editions of both the Avatar films for Christmas, they are 40 bucks each and I would have never paid that personally so I fell lucky lol. They look great. I am really not the biggest Avatar fan, but they are sure nice to look at in 4K.
I was SOOOOOOOO excited that The Abyss was finally coming to 4K and in the extended version (which imo is the only version). Absolutely one of my all time favorite movies. But, now I am reading all about the AI used in the process and people saying it looks bad. Apparently they used that AI in all the James Cameron movies coming out in 4K next month, and the results are bad. So I ask god….WHY???????? This imo is Disney being lazy and trying to cheaply put 0ut something to make a profit. I am always perplexed at the lackluster HD and or 4K releases from James Cameron’s movies. We STILL don’t have a good, decent, full version of Terminator 2 in 4K. If you look into it, they have continually messed with the color grading over the various releases. Horrible grain, waxed out skin, extended versions not in 4K (which imo are the better versions), etc. You would think someone like James would want perfection, and that doesn’t seem to be happening with his physical releases.
And, I have not seen Barbie, nor do I ever want to.
I’m a proponent of ripping your physical media to digital and keeping that stored locally.
I’ve lost a few CDs and DVDs to Disc Rot. One of the marketing shticks of the formats was their supposed durability. Imagine my surprise when the reflective layer started peeling off of them.

I will be getting the Abyss in 4k. One of the best movies ever.
It’s not really AI. Just more sophisticated than the automation they used before. It’s not really all that different than prior. I would say it’s automation with where there is less input or direction from humans. I have folks I know that have upscaled movies for me to 4k for titles that never got 4k. It looks awesome and I am sure they do not have access to billion dollar “AI”.

Absolutely. I do this with everything I have. I spend a lot of money on the resources for doing just that. I am sitting in a room right now with a dedicated Plex server and a NAS for just that reason.
