Deadpool & Wolverine Most-Watched Trailer of All Time
It seems clear that Disney will have at least one hit on its hands in 2024. According to Variety, the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer that aired during the Super Bowl is the most-watched movie trailer of all time, with 365 million views in 24 hours. This edges out the previous record-holder, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which had 355.5 million views in 24 hours. The caveat is that part of this is from people watching the Super Bowl, which was the most-watched telecast in television history with 123.7 million viewers. But still, that’s quite an achievement for Deadpool and his beclawed frenemy and an indication that barring unforeseen circumstances (like the movie turning out to be bad), Deadpool & Wolverine will likely be the year’s biggest blockbuster.
Despite the Super Bowl asterisk beside this victory, the popularity of the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer isn’t all that surprising. Deadpool has a lot of goodwill attached to him; audiences love the character, and he hasn’t been in a movie since 2018, so they’re hungry for more of him. The same goes for Wolverine, especially Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of him, who’s been away for even longer. See what happens when you don’t oversaturate the public with something they like? It helps that Deadpool’s two movies were good; Deadpool 2 isn’t as highly regarded as its predecessor, but it was far from a bad film, and it’s Citizen Kane compared to the last few years of Marvel movies. (If you haven’t, you should check out the “Super Duper Cut” on Blu-ray; it’s a marked improvement, and I liked the theatrical version.) Additionally, it’s a fun trailer that promises audiences this will be the Deadpool people want, not a neutered, Disneyfied version of him. That could be a bait-and-switch, but I think people trust Ryan Reynolds to safeguard the character; having him be the one to make that Disney joke likely went far in easing any fears on that score. They must be weeping in relief at Disney.
