Netflix, MAX Obtain Rights to The Boy and the Heron

Deadline reports that Netflix will hold streaming rights to The Boy and the Heron worldwide, excluding Japan and the United States. MAX will host the film in the US. This arrangement is part of an agreement between Netflix, Goodfellas, and GKIDS to bolster GKIDS streaming repertoire. Twenty-two other films, including Spirited AwayPrincess Mononoke, The Secret World of ArriettyKikis Delivery ServiceMy Neighbor Totoro, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, will continue streaming on Netflix. The Boy and the Heron won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature this year after becoming the third highest-grossing anime film at $167 million worldwide. It is also being re-released in US theaters this month.

I dont feel strongly about where the film will stream, but its good to hear that it will be readily available. I need to watch The Boy and the Heron again, maybe a few times, and think about it more. The artwork, music, and storytelling are incredible, even by Studio Ghiblis sky-high standards. But I still dont know what to make of the metaphors and symbolism. I look forward to revisiting it.

But what do you think? Did you see the film, and what do you think it all means? Are you going to watch it again on MAX, or Netflix if youre outside the States? Let us know in the comments!

I’d buy it on Blu-ray instead, I’m pretty sure the streaming bubble is ready to burst by now.
