Angel Studios Announces New Film Fellowship: Tolkien & Lewis

There has certainly been no shortage of news regarding J.R.R. Tolkien in these past couple of weeks; however, this time, C.S Lewis is to take a role in the spotlight as well. Angel Studios announced via an X post on May 9th that they will be developing a film about the two classic writers regarding their magnum opuses, titled Fellowship: Tolkien & Lewis.

Fellowship: Tolkien & Lewis will explore Tolkien and Lewis’ processes whilst they write their series of novels, The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. Both authors were close friends and formed an informal literary discussion group in the early 1930s called “The Inklings.” The weekly meetings took place in the local pub in Oxford called The Eagle and Child, but locally known as “Bird and Baby.” Members included Warren Lewis (C.S Lewis’ elder brother), Victor “Hugo” Dyson, Adam Fox, Neville Coghill, Owen Barfield, Robert “Humphrey” Havard, Gervase Mathew, and Lord David Cecil, along with Tolkien’s own son, Christopher, on occasion.
Tolkien himself described the meetings as “A feast of reason and flow of the soul.” (Letters, 102) These meetings were also where Tolkien read pages of The Lord of the Rings aloud as he was writing it, with C.S. Lewis reading from Out of the Silent Planet.
This news seemed to have been under the radar for a bit, what with the announcements of the upcoming Gollum films and the lore-destroying, soulless Rings of Power season 2. Angel Studios is known for being more faith-based, therefore many people are expressing interest in their portrayal of the two very devout Christian and Catholic authors, respectively. A fresh, new take on these brilliant men’s lives should be aspiring to view, and I, for one, am looking forward to what the studio will present as the final product.

Lore destroying and soulless was a good way to put it, Jess. Hopefully Angel Studios will do Tolkien some justice, it does sound similar to the film “Tolkien” that came out several years ago, which wasn’t too bad.
I try to support Angel Studios, almost any time I can. Don’t know if I am excited, but I am curious. Never saw Tolkien, the movie with Nicolas Hoult. Also, I never saw Freud’s Last Session, where he talks to C.S. Lewis, but I was curious about that one. There was a graphic novel biography, a comic book, about Tolkien’s life called Tolkien: Lighting Up the Darkness, but I didn’t get into it that much.
I thought the most surprising movie of the last few years was Nefarious. Just two guys talking and it was really compelling. That movie inspired me of how much can be done with so little. I am impressed by anything that has a low budget that can hook and hold my attention, because it’s not easy to do.
Faith films are the outlier. They are the different thing now and the underground thing. All Angel Studios has to do is be super discerning in their distribution choices to pick winners to uplift and inspire. That’s what they try to do.
