What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!
The reign of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continued this weekend as the movie was able to reach $329,848,000 at the global box office after three weeks. This puts it on pace to earn well over $400 million by the end of its run. Making this amount would mean we are also looking at the movie walking away with about +$75 million in net profits, which is a huge win for a film that has really divided fans, with many being critical of everything except for Michael Keaton, who has rightfully gotten universal praise. The fact that after three weeks, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continues to occupy the #1 spot domestically shows how strong the love for the film is despite the criticism.
It must also be said, however, that its reign as the top film is partly because of how weak the new releases have been. Last week, Speak No Evil was only able to make about a fifth of what Beetlejuice Beetlejuice did in its debut, and this weekend, Transformers One had the worst opening in franchise history, losing even to Bumblebee (2018) when you compare ticket sales and adjust the openings for inflation. To put things into perspective, the estimated opening weekend ticket sales for the domestic release of Transformers One sits at about 1,923,077 tickets sold. Going back to last year’s Rise of the Beast, which sold about 4,653,846 tickets, and Bumblebee, which sold roughly 2,376,954, it is not hard to see just how bad the Transformers One opening is. One could argue that good word of mouth and many fans praising the film could be enough to keep it alive and make a comeback, but as of right now, and with the numbers being what they are, it is pretty clear that this film is set to bomb.
According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:
After last week, I got a lot of pushback for speaking about the numbers for Am I Racist? being a bit lacking compared to the initial projections. While I still hold to that because facts remain true, it is also true that this movie has been able to make its money back and is now adding to its total profits. By reaching $9,007,507 this past weekend and with a budget of $3 million, the movie has now made roughly $454,129 in net profits. While this may be low, it is important to remember that most films these days, regardless of budget, do not make their money back theatrically. With Am I Racist? facing immense backlash and a mainstream media blackout, this is a very impressive feat, no matter what the film may be. Even when you adjust for inflation, the movie is still in the conversation for the top 20 documentary openings of all time for domestic releases. Though the amount remains low and the ticket sales are nothing to write home about necessarily, this is still a massive win for the film and The Daily Wire.
Another big win this weekend was for the Universal release of Speak No Evil, which, after two weeks, has made roughly $42,390,000 worldwide. With a budget of just $15 million, the movie is only about -$2,325,750 in the red and is expected to start making a profit by next week easily. To go from around $11 million globally to about $42 million is quite impressive and seems to indicate that the word of mouth for this movie is helping it quite a bit. Though the reviews have been mixed, it is clear that there are many passionate moviegoers that are either seeing this film multiple times or spreading the word quite effectively. Regardless of any of this, the movie is set to make between $13,834,286 and $28,368,000 in net profits by the end of its run, which is quite a success, especially when you compare it to the budget. Overall, this is a big win for everyone involved.
