Love Hurts Trailer Brings the Pain

Ke Huy Quan is set to become the world’s next action hero. The former 80s child star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies, who recently won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, is the star of Love Hurts, a new action film from 87North, and today, the first trailer was released. Distributed by Universal Pictures, Love Hurts – which was previously titled With Love – finds Quan play Marvin Gable, a friendly, upbeat realtor who finds himself the target of a criminal organization run by his brother and must embrace the deadly past he once rid himself of to survive. Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, and Sean Astin join Quan in supporting roles. Jonathan Eusebio, a stuntman and second unit director, makes his directorial debut with Love Hurts, which is written by Matthew Murray, Josh Stoddard, and Luke Passmore. Love Hurts will be released on February 7, 2025, and you can see the trailer below:

I’ve been looking forward to Love Hurts ever since it was announced, albeit under a different title, mostly because I love 87North. This production company is run by former stuntman and John Wick co-director David Leitch and his partner, Kelly McCormick, and it exclusively produces action movies, many directed by former stuntmen like Jonathan Eusebio. Nobody, Bullet Train, The Fall Guy, and especially Violent Night were all great, melding the new style of filming action with old-school sensibilities (like coherence) and creating fun, energetic flicks. The Love Hurts trailer indicates that its next feature will continue that tradition, with the fight scenes fast and silly while having impressive choreography. There’s also a good deal of comedy, which is par for the course with 87North movies, and the setup of Ke Huy Quan trying to balance the new, peaceful life he’s carved out for himself with his past as a ruthless assassin should allow for some interesting characterization and a nice arc. There should also be plenty of heart and humanity with his old partner returning to help him and his brother trying to kill him. The human themes they sneak into these films are what make them so special (Bullet Train is much smarter than it seems, and Violent Night is brimming with Christmas Spirit despite all the blood and guts), and 87North is one of the few studios that will get me to the theater on its name alone.

Love Hurts, Ke Huy Quan

I’m also glad to see Ke Huy Quan in a film like this now that his career is in resurgence. His Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once led to a voice acting role in Kung Fu Panda 4 and a disappointing small part on Loki (which completely wasted him because that’s what Marvel does now). I hope Love Hurts is a better showcase for his talents, and based on the trailer, I think it will be. Quan seems like a really nice guy, and his character in this trades on that persona by having him as a friendly realtor before subverting it by revealing that he’s actually a lethal assassin. And the latter aspect of the character should be no problem, either, as Quan has worked as a fight choreographer on movies like X-Men and The One. (And, while I didn’t see it, he appears to have done a lot of martial arts damage in Everything Everywhere All At Once as well.) Watching him transition from meek and mild to ass-kicking action hero should be a lot of fun, and maybe it’ll lead to more roles like this for Quan.
