The season is almost upon us, so every year, we get these kind of movies. Thought it was interesting that they went after Mormonism, in addition to Catholicism this year. There was also the Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which was fine. Conclave is being called “Oscar Bait” for doing exactly what Az complained about in that video game. Fing pronouns! Pushing the latest California thing. That’s literally all it took, some gimmick to get a pat on the head.
Heretic, on the other hand, was much deeper. Some people called it a version of Saw. I could talk endlessly about this movie. At first, I hated it, but I went to see it a second time. There is a lot of symbolism, duality, religion, secularism, even zen, as well as Simulation Hypothesis. It was almost like an out of control professor berating youth. Heretic as macabre art. I hated it, but it made me think about all the things that happened and there are almost endless interpretations of this film. It managed to trigger both Believers and Disbelievers. There are inversions of inversions in the story and dialogue. Can’t say I recommend it, because it’s definitely not for everyone. Many will be bored, but I was into it.
The most unfortunate thing about this, is that just two years ago, we has Asbury, followed by Nefarious and Jesus Revolution and that trifecta really put faith films on the map. The only difference was, in that case, it was overall positive, where these ones were nihilistic and current day.
