I’ll be honest, dear readers.
I have been sitting here for a good 20 minutes trying to come up with something clever to write about this trailer for James Gunn’s Superman.
Something that will grab your attention.
Something witty.
Something full of critical and logical points about how A, B, and C sucked.
But to be transparent, I absolutely cannot do any of that.
I LOVED this trailer.
Loved it.
Does Nathan Fillion look ridiculous in that wig? Yes. But Google Guy Gardner and you’ll see that it’s spot on. So, while I laughed at how goofy he looked, I also smiled wide because that is GUY FREAKING GARDNER.
Krypto? Nailed it. Seriously, that dog is adorable, and I want one.
Lois Lane? She’s perfect, and they not only put her in the purple but there’s a scene of her and Clark floating while kissing. ICONIC. Everyone knows that scene, whether you read the comics or not. It’s a staple, and it’s there.
Lex Luthor? Nicholas Holt is going to blow minds with his performance; I can feel it.
And Superman? Well, let’s just say that it’s good to see the man back in his trunks. The suit looks great, and David looks the part.
Not to mention the little things: Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gismondo) making a SUPER (get it?) brief appearance, the Stagg Industries logo popping up, a possible Kelex sighting, a Kaiju????, and last but not least, a quick look at Metamorpho, played by the wonderful Anthony Carrigan (Victor Zsasz, Gotham).
There’s a lot happening in this trailer, and it moves fast. What I like about it is that it doesn’t reveal too much. So many trailers nowadays give the whole plot away in two minutes (looking at you, Speak No Evil), and while we can probably put two and two together and guess the overall typical comic book plot, there’s no obvious indication of where the film is going. It gives us just enough of everything without revealing everything. It’s a great balance, one that Gunn has always been good at.
Another thing I loved was how real the farm felt in the brief moment we saw it. The camera pans the Kent farm very quickly, but if you pause it, you see a simple house with a lot of cows. The Kent farm has always looked different from adaptation to adaptation, but I remember when the photo of the farm first leaked on the internet and the backlash it got. Typical. But if you know anything about farm country, you know that the general home looks just like that, and not some grandiose mansion on a plot of land. As I talked about in my trailer reaction, if you freeze-frame it, you can see that the land goes pretty far back, and the Kents have quite a bit of cattle. Anything other than that just isn’t realistic, generally speaking. It looks homely and safe, which is exactly how Clark is brought up. It fits, in my opinion.
Everything about this teaser hit me right in the Hype Feels. I cannot wait to see more of the Fortress of Solitude, which was pretty prominent in this trailer. I like the direction it’s going. I like how it didn’t focus on “This is how Clark Kent becomes Superman.” We know that. The character is over 80 years old. We don’t need yet another 30 minutes of background on young Clark growing up and learning about his powers. After 40+ years of Superman films and TV series, the general audience gets it, and from what I can tell, Gunn seems to understand that, too.
The trailer may start with Supes bloodied in the snow, but the hopefulness it brings all around drowns that out. You can literally feel the love the community has for Superman, and if you missed it, there’s a crowd of people chanting “Superman! Superman! Superman!” to nail the point home. Words cannot express how happy I was watching this trailer. It’s vibrant. It’s happy. It’s hopeful. It’s everything I was hoping for, and it’s only a teaser trailer. I cannot wait for the full trailer and, of course, to watch the movie.
Krypto, take us home. Superman is in theaters on July 11, 2025.

There are a lot of people, understandably, hesitant to be hopeful on this one. Some people see Woke in it. Yes, there are minority characters and Hawkgirl instead of Hawkman. However, those are real, actual characters who already exist in that universe and in Superman in particular. They belong in this. Lois looks like Lois; Superman seems to be acting like Superman; characters look exactly how they are supposed to. The mood is optimistic. Smallville looks earnest. I am more than a little hopeful.
Krypto in the age of Crypto is a smart move.
I do like the dog angle to add a little something different.
I like that they show him saving and rescuing. A trope for our first responders. Needed. One of the things that used to make USA special was being idealistic. Americans were once known as the most idealistic people.
