Box Office Breakdown for Weekend of 1/19/25

What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!

One of Them Days and Wolf Man Struggle Atop Slow MLK Weekend

Though we still need the Monday numbers to get the full picture for the holiday weekend, the current numbers show a very weak opening for Wolf Man and a much better-than-expected domestic debut for a movie most people still haven’t heard of called One of Them Days. The better numbers for One of Them Days are not too surprising as it fits the typical MLK weekend movie meant to pander to African-American audiences who, as a box office group, are typically hard to predict as far as what they will and will not see. More impressive than both of these movies, however, is that after five weeks, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is still in the top 3 and, after the weekend final numbers are released, still has a chance to take the #1 spot away from One of Them Days. January continues to be where new films go to die, but the life of movies released over Christmastime has proven to be the real story of the current box office.

Looking closer at the numbers for the new releases, Wolf Man is currently expected to have received $10,550,000, while One of Them Days scored a marginally better $11,600,000 at the domestic box office. Wolf Man was the costlier movie of the two, with a budget of about $25 million, while One of Them Days cost around $14 million. Though neither will be a massive box office loser because of those low budgets, neither seems to be in a good position to make any profit theatrically, either. January once again produces a lower-budgeted movie that cannot get a foothold to do much of anything… and over the last few years, this story has extended far beyond January.

According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:

  1. One of Them Days ($11.6 million as a new release)
  2. Mufasa: The Lion King (19% drop in 5th weekend)
  3. Wolf Man ($10.5 million as a new release)
  4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (24% drop in 5th weekend)
  5. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (56% drop in 2nd weekend)

Den of Thieves 2 Begins Fall into Obscurity as  Moana 2 Crosses $1 Billion

After a relatively weak opening for the sequel to a movie most people have never seen or even heard of, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera saw a fair week-2 domestic drop of about 56%. With a reported budget of around $40 million, the movie has a loss of about -$40 million, and projections now point to it losing about $25 million by the end of its run. Though it’s not the biggest bomb of the year, this still suggests a lack of interest in this seemingly out-of-nowhere “franchise.” The lovely audience over on Criticless does currently have the film scored at a “Rad” 65%, though it must be noted that it seems most of the scores are in the “Decent” camp.

While Den of Thieves 2 is looking to once again spin into obscurity, we can now officially say that Moana 2 is a billion-dollar film, as it has now reached $1,009,898,932 globally after about 8 weeks. Though this happened a bit later than I would have expected after its massive opening weekend, the fact remains that Disney has now had three billion-dollar movies released in 2024. I had a feeling about Moana 2 being a sleeper hit for 2024, and it has now officially reached its apex, though the movie still has some gas left in the tank to carry it a bit higher over the next couple of weeks.

Mufasa Dominates and Gains Ground on Sonic 3

Ever since the 2nd week of release, the battle between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King has mostly easily gone to the objectively terrible Lion King prequel. Whether it is winning every daily box office battle since the Wednesday of their 2nd week or clearly dominating internationally, it is abundantly clear that, whereas Sonic 3 has had a decent box office run for a movie within its own franchise, Mufasa has done better than it had any right to. While Sonic 3 did open with almost 2x the domestic numbers, since that time, Mufasa has clawed back and is now only about $10 million away from catching up. Considering how the films are currently tracking, there is a good chance that Sonic 3 will end up losing both the domestic and the international box office to Mufasa… though a real box office victory is ultimately profit, and that battle will easily go to the already profitable (albeit currently very slightly) Sonic the Hedgehog 3, while Mufasa remains at about -$30 million in losses.
