What’s up, Geeks + Gamers? It’s ODIN!
After much anticipation for some fresh blood at the box office, it seems that Bong Joon Ho’s $118 million delayed sci-fi flick, Mickey 17, has failed to reach any level of initial success. For a film that needs to make roughly $350 million worldwide just to break even, starting out with $53,300,000 globally and some very rough word-of-mouth means that even if it were to achieve an average run at the box office from this point forward, it would likely only make about $150 million worldwide… OOF. With twenty reviews currently over on Criticless, Mickey 17 stands at a 35% “Bogus” score, and, as of yet, only one person has given the film a “Rad” score, with all other reviews ranging from “Decent” to “Heinous.” While some in the box office shill media may try to spin this as a win by pointing out that Mickey 17 won the domestic weekend battle, that would only show why the mainstream box office media cannot be trusted to give the numbers to you straight. The truth is that the movie is currently sitting at about $150 million in the red, and its chances of climbing out of that slump do not look promising.
According to the-numbers.com, the top 5 this weekend domestically were:
The saga of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania vs. Captain America: Brave New World continues this week, with Brave New World continuing to win the daily battles (even over the weekend) domestically but still trailing Quantumania by about 11% in North America. When comparing the global totals of the two films, the ground that has been gained domestically vanishes as Captain America 4 is tracking about 18% behind where Quantumania was at the same point in its theatrical release. To give this comparison some perspective, while Quantumania had made about $447 million globally by this point in its box office time frame, Brave New World currently sits at only $370 million. With more movies coming out soon and the box office run for Captain America: Brave New World running out of steam, the chances of the movie finally being able to catch up to Quantumania are becoming almost mathematically impossible.
The only wide-release movie to have a 2nd-weekend report this week was the Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu-starring film Last Breath, which had a weak opening for a movie that cost $23,800,000 to make before marketing and theater/studio box office splits. Though it only dropped about 47% domestically in its sophomore weekend, the projections we can now make for it do not look great. Having made only $14,854,221 worldwide as of the writing of this article, we can now project that Last Breath will take in between $21,220,316 and $29,708,442 globally by the end of its run. Even though it does currently have a solid 79% “Rad” score over on Criticless, the word-of-mouth has clearly not been too strong for Last Breath, and the movie is currently tracking to lose about $20-25 million by the end of its run.
