Sadie Sink Cast in Spider-Man 4

Spider-Man has a new leading lady. Deadline exclusively reports that Sadie Sink, who has played Max on Stranger Things since the Netflix show’s second season, will star opposite Tom Holland in the next Spider-Man movie that takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film doesn’t have a title yet, no plot details have been released, and the only character we’re sure will be in it is Spidey himself, but we do know it will be written by Chris McKenna and Eric Summers, who wrote the previous three MCU Spider-Man films, and it will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, because Marvel has more or less given up at this point. There has been much speculation about what the plot of Spider-Man 4 will be, but it’s all guesswork right now; Deadline does say that Sadie Sink will have a “significant” role in the movie. Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2026, a week later than its previous release date, to move it further away from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also stars Tom Holland.

This is good news in terms of what the next Spider-Man movie will be. For quite a while, rumors abounded that Zendaya would be back as Michelle, Peter Parker’s girlfriend who called herself MJ, and while I would bet she will return, it looks like it may be in a limited role if Sadie Sink is the new female lead. I hope that’s true because Spider-Man: No Way Home had a terrific ending – in which Peter had Doctor Strange cast a spell that made the world forget who he was, effectively ending his relationship with Michelle and friendship with Jacob Batalon’s Ned – and bringing Michelle back in a substantial role would ruin it. If there’s a new lead, I could see her having a cameo, maybe Spidey watching her from afar in the beginning. In fact, this movie could be about Peter getting over Michelle by meeting someone new and embracing the new beginning his life is forced to take now, with whoever the villain is complementing that arc. I have no idea if this is where the film will go, but that could work very well. And while we’re at it, let’s also make it a low-key, classic Spidey adventure rather than bringing back the multiverse and a villain that should necessitate the Avengers assembling.

Now, for the fun part of this news story: guessing who Sadie Sink will be playing. There was a rumor not long ago that she was being considered to play Jean Grey in the next X-Men movie (or in whatever movie introduces the new X-Men – probably Doomsday or Secret Wars), but I sincerely doubt they’ll have Jean make her MCU debut in a Spider-Man film. The next obvious choice, considering Sink’s red hair, would be Mary Jane Watson, one of Peter Parker’s two greatest loves and the one Michelle was intended to replace despite being a completely different character. I always thought that having Mary Jane appear later in the Spidey films could fit with Michelle’s role in the early ones; when Peter hears her say people call her MJ, it would be like a signal that there was something special about her. Marvel kind of ruined that when they said Michelle’s former last name was Watson in No Way Home, but who knows? Maybe they could figure something out. Sink could also be Gwen Stacy, and despite the hair color (the inaccuracy of which is kind of a tradition for Spidey’s ladies on film), I think she’d be a better fit for that part. No offense meant, but Mary Jane is supposed to be an absolute bombshell, while Sink has more of a girl-next-door feel. Another possibility is Felicia Hardy, who will become the Black Cat, but I don’t see Sink in that part at all. As of now, my money (which will probably be lost) is on Gwen Stacy. But we’ll see what happens as Spider-Man 4 comes together.
