If you have followed my reviews on this site for any time, you’ll know that I reviewed this year’s A Quiet Place when it released in April. You’d also know that I absolutely adored the film. The tense direction, great musical score, and Oscar-caliber performances blew me away. It wasn’t too long after the film’s release, and immense box office gross, that Paramount expressed interest in doing a Quiet Place sequel. I can’t say I was surprised by this development; what studio wouldn’t want to build upon a film that just made them millions of dollars in profits? On the other hand, I’m not exactly yearning for a sequel. My main concern is that they’ll milk this concept by turning it into a franchise and diminish the creativity and pure craft that went into that first film.
Like it or not, the release date for the A Quiet Place sequel has been set for May 15th, 2020. Now, that’s a good chunk of time to plan out and shoot such a small-scale film. It’s been confirmed that John Krasinski, the director and star, will definitely be involved, which calms my trepidations a bit. I will say that I’m not sure if the May 15th release date is wise. There’s an untitled Marvel film set to begin the month; there’s also Godzilla vs. King Kong to contend with. Both of these are going to hold audiences’ attention. I think staying in April would have been a better decision, or maybe even moving later into the year, like August or September. Those months usually experience a drought when it comes to quality filmmaking. Maybe I’m completely misreading this; maybe they’re just super confident in their property and think it will be counter-programing to those blockbusters. We’ll see in 2020!
