The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a Winnie-the-Pooh prequel film is coming now that A. A. Milne’s beloved children’s books have entered the public domain. Mike de Seve (Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens) is set to direct the film and co-write with John Reynolds (The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show.) De Seve’s animation studio Baboon (Angry Birds, Gigantosaurus) is working with Winvest Group subsidiary IQI to produce the prequel feature, which aims to capitalize on films like Paddington.
“We’re telling the surprising origin story of the ‘silly young bear’ and his friends, when they were still kids, in a way designed to connect with 21st-century kids,” says Reynolds.
I don’t really care about this one way or the other. I loved the Pooh films and series as a kid and still have affection for them, but I can’t pretend to be an expert on A. A. Milne’s books. I don’t see the point in making child versions of characters who are already so childlike. And they’re stuffed animals; they were never baby stuffed animals. But I’m not saying the movie won’t be good or introduce its own great renditions of these characters. Without more information or some key art, I’m not passing judgment.
