Although it’s not a real PPV event, AEW Dynamite presents “Winter is Coming” for the second year as a themed episode of the weekly show. The use of the name didn’t excite me last year, nor does it do anything for me this time around. Well, AEW’s choice of font is interesting, at least. This issue of Winter is Coming results is brought to you by the letter H, which looks like a W…
Last year’s Winter is Coming results showed AEW delivering the surprise debut of Sting at this event. This year, we just got a little nod to that nostalgic moment a whopping year ago, as well as a pretty solid show from Tony Khan and all involved.
Speaking of the spoiled little turd, here’s how Booker of the Year Tony Khan has been playing it since signing the likes of CM Punk and Bryan Danielson a few months back…
Play time’s over, and AEW desperately needs to shed the skin it’s had for the last two years now. They’ve genuinely got the talent and the tools for the job; they could just do with cutting the dead weight and putting together the best weekly shows possible. I feel that Adam Page missed the boat a while ago (thanks to bad booking), and his title reign’s impact has already peaked. Because of this, having Bryan Danielson take the belt off him at this point wouldn’t hurt him nearly as much as some believe it would, especially if it was Bryan that snatched it from him.
As ExcaliBORE the terrible has done many times before, he began shouting/whoring State Farm over the initial lockup from the match we’ve all been waiting for. I’m pretty sure I could hear Taz let out a sigh. I get that sponsorship is important, but imitating WWE’s by prioritizing someone else’s product over their own isn’t a great plan.
Winner: 60-minute time limit draw.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Bryan Danielson is a fantastic heel. The guy knows how to be a smug, salty prick like no other. It’s amusing that the crowd can’t figure out a way to chant for Bryan Danielson, so instead, they chanted Daniel Bryan. Page looked great in this match, but so has everyone else that’s shared the ring with Danielson in AEW so far. The fans weren’t happy with the match running out of time, but at least both Page and Bryan’s records survived the night unscathed.
Winner: Wardlow (pinfall)
A lovely little squash match – just what was needed after the previous hour-long battle. Shawn Spears tried to get Wardlow to end it after just one powerbomb, but Wardlow gave the crowd a second. Spears jumped in the ring to belt Sydal with his chair before telling Wardlow that MJF needs him to pick up some laundry for him.
Winner: Hikaru Shida (pinfall)
Deeb knocked Shida around for a while before Shida made a comeback after a break. Deeb shut Shida down and tried to set up an exposed turnbuckle, but Shida caused Deeb’s plan to backfire.
Winner: MJF (submission)
MJF cut a blazing promo on CM Punk and Texas before the match, antagonizing the crown into getting behind anyone that may walk down the aisle. Martin hit MJF with his finish, but Ricky Starks appeared and put MJF’s foot on the bottom rope. Once the confusion was cleared up, Martin walked into the Salt of the Earth and tapped out. FTR joined MJF in the ring to celebrate, but Sting and Darby Allin showed up to spoil the rest of their night. The heels managed to get the advantage thanks to some low-blows, but CM Punk charged down to scare them off. He then challenged them to a six-man tag match at the next available convenience.
Without a doubt, this was the best episode of AEW Dynamite since it first aired, mostly because Bryan Danielson was in charge of the first half of it… mostly. A Wardlow-smash match followed by Serena Deeb’s clinic was a nice little palate cleanser before the main event was served up. The Hardy Soyz Young Bucks and Adam Cole were only briefly spotted backstage, Kenny Omega’s still trying to sneak back into Japan, and there were no sightings of many of the jokes and painfully sloppy amateurs from Tony Khan’s Toybox.
The only thing that held the quality of the matches back was the typical interruptions by adverts… oh yeah, and Aubrey Edwards trotting around like a pony on show while flailing her arms around at the same time.
