Deadline exclusively reports that Amphibia creator and author of the lore-expanding book Marcy’s Journal Matt Braly is directing a new animated movie for Sony Pictures Animation. This untitled feature will be a Thai fantasy epic, drawing in part on Braly’s cultural upbringing like Amphibia did. He will also co-write the script with Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar. The movie’s story follows a boy who journeys to a Thai spirit realm to cure an illness. Braly previously worked with Sony Pictures Animation as a storyboard artist on the film The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Check out Braly’s enthusiastic tweet here:
Working on this with @SonyAnimation and @rebeccasugar has been a dream come true so far. Please look forward to it!!! https://t.co/KgnbesI4W4

This is certainly interesting news. I’m not a huge Steven Universe fan; I liked the little I saw, but I never delved too deep or watched the whole show. But I love Amphibia, and Braly’s involvement alone is enough to interest me in the movie he’s developing. Sony Pictures Animation has established itself as an impressive studio, frequently putting out better content than Disney or DreamWorks, with films like the Spider-Verse movies, Arthur Christmas, and Hotel Transylvania under their belt. I look forward to more information regarding this new Thai film.
But what do you think? Let us know in the comments!
