Angelina Jolie is massively coping with the revelation that several Middle Eastern nations (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar) have decided to pull Eternals from their cinemas, sparing their denizens from the MCU’s lowest-rated film.
“I’m sad for [those audiences],” said Jolie to news.com.au during an interview. The Oscar winner, who lifelessly plays Thena in the theatrical abomination directed by natural lighting enthusiast Chloe Zhao, described the decision to pull the movie over a same-sex relationship depiction as “ignorant.”
“I’m proud of Marvel for refusing to cut those scenes out,” Jolie said. Bryan Tyree Henry’s character, Phastos, is married to a mortal man, portrayed by Dubai-born Haaz Sleiman. The two share a stunning and brave first for the MCU, embracing in a kiss that a grown man (Sleiman) called “life-saving” to Variety.
Funnily enough, Jolie never did comment on China declining to screen Eternals, one of the main reasons for which is past comments from director Zhao that were critical of the glorious Chinese Communist Party. Yet, Angelina won’t stand up for someone she has been so complimentary of previously. Perhaps she wants to make sure that the CCP screen the upcoming Every Note Played. Sucks to have a selective backbone.
Eternals is looking at an uphill battle, thanks to tepid early reviews. According to Variety, Marvel hopes this ensemble disaster can drag up $75 million locally in an attempt to make back some of the hefty $200 million budget.
