Another Skeleton Crew Trailer Comes Out
On Friday, Disney and Lucasfilm put out yet another trailer for Skeleton Crew, the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series about a group of lost children trying to find their way back to their home planet. The show drops in just over a month, on December 3rd, and there’s no hype or marketing for it outside of the multiple clips Disney has produced. This one shows some of the missing children’s parents, gives a better look at Jude Law’s character, and presents some interesting scenery. Check out the latest Skeleton Crew trailer here:
Well, that was different. I’m not excited for Skeleton Crew, but I think this is the best trailer they’ve released for it so far. This is the first time I feel like we’ve seen the world of this show beyond the pseudo-suburbia the kids live in. That setting isn’t cool at all, but I like the imagery we get here. The huge head statue-looking thing, the spaceship, and the port the kids go to are genuinely intriguing. I also like that we get to see one of the kids’ parents and their concern for him. I’m not excited about the kids, and I don’t think the idea of a show centered on Star Wars’ pirates is as cool as the creators seem to think it is. So, I’m encouraged to see that there may be more to Skeleton Crew, though I still don’t think it’ll be amazing. It’s been sold as and Amblin-produced Star Wars story and “Stranger Things in space,” which is fine, but it’s probably not for me.
I’m surprised to hear pop music in a Star Wars trailer, that being “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling. This song was a sequel, and kind of a response, to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” The Acolyte shoehorned “Power of Two” into the end credits of episode 7, “Choice,” but it wasn’t in the show’s advertising. It’s bold to use something so antithetical to immersion to sell a show people would undoubtedly turn to for escapism. I find pop music distracting and ill-suited to sci-fi and fantasy. This is just my opinion, and it’s not the biggest deal either way. And, of course, this is just a trailer. But what do you guys think?
My main issue with Skeleton Crew is that it just doesn’t really appeal to me in any way. Making Star Wars about a bunch of little kids and setting it (at least early on) in suburbia makes it look boring to me, not something that features what I love about the franchise. Part of me is glad they’re at least mixing up the formula, but that only makes the show different, not necessarily good or great. For whatever reason, Disney+ can’t figure Star Wars out besides Andor and most of the animation. I think there’s plenty of room for a sillier Star Wars show with a younger target demographic, and I have no problem with that. But it would be ideal if the project also appealed to adults, and I don’t think that’s the case here. Star Wars should be something families can watch together most of the time, and I don’t picture a ton of parents chomping at the bit for modern-day space Goonies. I could be wrong, and I will watch the show to review it. But I’m far from psyched for this, and pretty much anything Star Wars except for Andor season 2.
