The spies are going out into the cold this winter, as Apple TV+ and Universal Pictures have released a trailer for Argylle. The newest action comedy from Michael Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, the outstanding Layer Cake), Argylle revolves around Elly Conway, a spy fiction writer who suddenly finds herself drawn into a real-life spy adventure. Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cena also star, with Henry Cavill playing the titular hero of her novels, Argylle. Written by Jason Fuchs, Argylle will arrive in theaters on February 2, 2024 (meaning Bill Murray will be watching it over and over forever) and on Apple TV+ at a later date. You can see the trailer below:
Argylle looks like a lot of fun. Matthew Vaughn sometimes balances tones very well and sometimes gets too bogged down in comedy; if he can maintain the proper equilibrium this time, this could be a great spy fantasy. It does seem like another riff on Romancing the Stone, but it looks a lot better than The Lost City (which, to be fair, I haven’t seen). I love the cast, and each member seems just right for their part. Bryce Dallas Howard – put behind glasses to make sure we understand she’s bookish, what with the books she writes and all – gives off the vibe of a mousy writer swept into the world of danger and intrigue she could once only imagine. As the real spy, Sam Rockwell is effective as a contrast to the romantic notions of the dashing, unflappable secret agent. Speaking of which, everyone but the James Bond people seem to get how well Henry Cavill fits the 007 mold (or maybe they do get it, but that’s another rant – a very long, angry rant); here, as he did in The Man From UNCLE, he’s playing a James Bond type, and he looks like he’ll be terrific. I like his flattop; it reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his heyday. And rounding it out with great actors who can do a lot with a little, like Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and Catherine O’Hara, is perfect. I’m looking forward to this.
